so he other day , my buddy strips out the oil drain plug while changing the oil ( oh yeah , 1986 f150 4x4 w/ 302) so i get the bright idea to jsut replace the whole pan.
nedless to say , its not as easy as it sounds , i practically took apart the whole underside jsut to get the pan out.
and then i had to disconnnect the oil pump , well not reading the manual , we reasembled everything , and now we have no oil pressure , so we get out the book , and low and behold , we needed to prime the oil pump, it had discussed filing it with petroluem jelly . so i guess my question is , can the oil pump be primed any other way other then removing the oil pan again , and packing it with petroluem jelly ?
and if not , where exactly do i pack the p.j? at the sump or in the oil pump itself , and how much should i pack it .
I havent really heard of putting petroleum jelly in it.
I ran a long extension hooked onto my electric drill with a socket that fit over the oil pump drive shaft. accessed through the hole for the distributor.
then wound it out for awhile until it was spurting oil out of the heads.
I duct taped the extensions and sockets together to keep them from falling off.
another way we did it once was to take out the oil pressure gauge .pull up with another car and take the gauge out of it and run a line between the two.start the helper up for a few seconds and it filled the system in the other car .
Amazing how many people get a stripped drain plug. I install them by hand until they seat. Then, I snug them up. I've never stripped a plug in 35 years of working on my cars.
Petroleum jelly is an old mechanic trick for priming an oil pump. Rebuilt an old 318 Dodge (aack!) and replaced the oil pump. Packed the pump and assembled it. Turned the motor over with the plugs removed and had oil pressure in about 10 seconds.
Nice to replace the pan. What did that one set you back?
$32 from a local ford only junkyard , great shape , eve nhad a good plug LOL
i saw some on ebay for $32 chrome ones and black ones , but then id have to pay shipping and wait for it to get here .

p.s. do you pack the pump with petroluem jelly comeplety , including the sump?then run it with out plugs , you mean ot jsut keep keying it up , for how long ?
I would be sure the oil pump drive is in the distributor and the oil pump. I've just primed mine with the distributor out and used the drill and socket method. Always came right up. This should be the same as cranking the motor. Double check everything if you pull the pan again. Be sure that you didn't crack the pickup tube while pulling or replacing the pan. Good luck!!!
You just take the top off of the pump itself and pack the roto-gears with jelly. Dont pack the pick-up tubes. The jelly will draw the oil up the pickup tube as it is forced out of the pump. As I said before, this has been done for years. On the 318 that I built, the whole pump is removed. We scrubbed the pick-up screen while we were at it. The old engine had always had regular oil changes. There was a fair amount of sludge on everything.
Dont attempt this kind of work if you dont have FULL knowledge of what you are doing. You can ruin your engine if you do this wrong.
