Any other pheasant hunters out there?? Me, my father and our friend go to a hunting reserve near us to hunt during and after the season. Its an excellent place, many large fields that are well separated and each "party" gets their own field. There is even a building to clean the birds (stainless steel counters, sprayers and all the cuttlery you'd need). Some people think its cheating, hunting where you know birds were set loose, this guy sets them loose a few days in advance to give them time to settle. Well, I'll tell you the last time we went there were 10 birds set loose in our field(actually 4-5 plots of sorgum, corn and other crops separated by 10ft wide "roads") we only saw 5 and shot 2!! Very fun and we're going tomorrow at 8:30am. Cant wait!!
I live here in Kansas in the middle of Ringneck country. Do sme bird hunting, and have the luxury of family owning several hundred acres of all types of land. We don't really like some of the out of staters that tend to not follow rules, but for the most part it is a big income for hotels resteraunts and the local sporting good stores.
I also live in Kansas in the middle of some prime bird hunting. I go every chance I get. My 11 year old son started hunting with me this year. He is my best hunting buddy now. Besides being a fun and sporting event, in my opinion pheasant is some of the best table fare for foul that you can find..
I'm with Flip4ford though. There are a lot of out-of-staters that come here and have no regard for property owners and laws. There is plenty of public walk in land out here that is populated with pheasant and cover for the pheasant.
I know a guy here that "plants" birds and guides hunts. He puts out way more than 10 birds per field but it is kinda pricey for me. I have plenty of land to hunt on so I prefer to go find the birds in thier natural environment and hunt that way.
By the way, hunting has been exellent this year. Lots of birds in the freezer. Let us know how you did.!!!!!!!!!
I'm one of those out of staters that provides to Kansas' income. I drive from Utah to Phillipsburg (14 hours) and really enjoy the hospitality I recieve from the locals. Looking forward to it agian next year.
glad to hear you enjoy your kansas hunting. Please understand that Flip4ford and I were not running down all out of staters. I have just witnessed a lot of out of staters that don't follow the law. Granted, most of them do.
I have had people come up from oklahoma to hunt with me that want to shoot anything that flies, rooster or hen, because they wanna get thier money worth. ($75 liscense plus gas to get here) They also think they can go on any land they want to and hunt it. I just tell'em if they are gonna do that then I am not gonna go out with them and support that activity.
As a note, there are a lot of locals that do the same thing, it is just that the out of staters stand out more. Wildlife management is the best it has ever been and everybody should follow the law to protect species and hunting habitat for our future generations.
HD,
I don't go "to get my money's worth", I just go for the experience, but I do know the people you are talking about....we USED to hunt with a few. There are so many walk-in areas that you don't need to trespass to get some birds.
well, it was a half way decent day, untill the freezin rain and wind. Flushed up 5 birds, but we didnt get nota one. Most were just out of my range, but the one that was I only got one shot off and the shell jamed(first time it did that). Our friend still used this ol over under (which he had bad luck with the first time) and didnt have any better luck. It was fun though, say a few rabbits(too fast to get a shot off at), listened to the other hunters wastein their birds and I found a deer skull. Dogs had fun though, glad to get set loose, never stop running the whole time and loved chasin those birds. If it haddent been for the rain it wound've been allot more fun. Next month we'll be goin again, hopefully the waether will be better.
I used to hunt Phesants in Washington state. The guy that took me, used all the Feathers in his fly tying business.
I've been trying to talk my inlaw into a trip up to the Dakotas or that general area for a week of Phesant hunting.
If you have a good dog, it's one of life's greates pleasures.
Out in the Sage brush, by yourself it can be a little frustrating.
I got a Phesant with my Bow, in the air, with witness'.
I'm very lucky. I get to hunt in South Dakota yearly. I have been invited to join a group of 12 guys. We hunt 5000 private acres and are given the absolute best hospitality you could ever believe. The hunting includes a home-cooked breakfast and a home cooked dinner (roasts, turkey, etc,) prepared by the owner's wife. The guys are some of the best I've ever been around. All of the birds are wild so it's nothing planted. We hunt for three days from the opening bell to sunset. Since one of the guys owns a little stake, we have great bird cleaning facilities and we get to bring our own dogs. We have not failed to limit the 2 years I have gone--and I mean limit for the entire group, not just one or two guys. The total cost for hunting (meals, hunt, lodging) is $100 per day.
I get to hunt several thousand acres of river bottom in Eastern Montana. I'm not much for shooting pheasants. Of course, its much easier when you have a dog. I usually just bust them and then by the time I'm done fumbling with my shotgun, they're much more difficult to hit.
I did manage to sneak up on some turkeys this year thought, my dad swore up and down that your couldn't sneak up on turkeys.
