working on a 1982 F-150 4 x 4 can't get universal joint seperated to replace slip joint on right axel. From what i have found out it is a "FORD" differental, and not a Dana. any suggestions would be very appreciated.
It was long ago, but if I remember correctly, I had to(I know I did, I just don't remmeber if I had to) take the axle stub off the spindle, so the whole axle/u-joint assembly would slide through. This was a real pain in the butt. Whoever had messed with this before, had stripped the nuts on the little studs that held it on. So I had to grind the nuts in half. I had stripped my slip yoke/axle splines in a big storm we had, so I had to buy the yoke and the whole axle to repair the splines. While I was at it, I bought a cheap shock absorber accordian boot, and slipped this over the yoke/axle assembly with wire ties. This I thought would help keep the grease in, and the dirt out. I didn't want to do this again for a long time.
By the way, I went to the Ford dealer to get replacement studs for the axle stub. He claimed he couldn't get them anymore? So, for it to be strong enough, and give the necessary clearance around the spindle, I used those high grade black allen head bolts you can get at industrial supply places.
