I just got a 200L Drum of Rotella T 5w30 synthetic oil for my '03 powerstroke, now, i sat down and calculated the amount I change the oil, about 3 times a year, a figured the drum would do about 12 oil changes. which is at my current level of driving .... but i started thinking, this may be just a tad much oil for me because that should technically last me 4yrs if I drive the same amount of distances ... So my question is, should i just take it back, and get some 20L pails ? or would the oil be fine to last 4 years with the minimum driving i do ? (also keep in mind, im going to be going to school in another city, so this would make the oil change times more frequent)
Thanks everyone

Oil won't go bad, long as you store it right. If you saved an appreciable amount over buying the pails, go for it. Long as you have tried it before and are satisfied.
Is this a full synthetic, like the Mobil Delvac 1? First time I heard anyone refer to a synthetic 5W/30 except for boutique oils, that are not API rated. Been out of the loop for a while, which is why I am behind the times.
Going to have to check this out. Wanted a 5W/30 myself. I truely believe the engine will run better on it.

My concern with a drum of motor oil is finding a place to store it so no water or anything else gets inside before I can use 200L. If you had a barrell pump to put in the big bung and left it in, and it was in the shop, with some kind of cover.... Maybe it would be ok, but unless you saved a bundle of cash on buying in bulk I don't see the need. Just my opinion.

Sounds like you are good to go then! I haven't got my shop built yet so I can't store that much oil in a two car garage. Good luck!
