How do I get my fuel guage more accurate? Damn thing jumps all the time,Like when the engine is running,It'll show full if im on a full tank, then when I cut the engine off, guage drops back a quater or so. Then if I'm on empty,it'll go up some. And when the guage shows dead empty,I'm still running like I'm on full.
It's an '89 F150,Reg. cab,Longbox,300-6.
Thanks.
The gauge will cut off when you shut the engine off, if it's in the "run" position, it should display the proper fuel but it sounds like the sending unit for it is gone or has a bad connection. My F-250's two tanks will stay pegged on full for 3/4ths of the tank, then it'll start jumping around and sorta try to tell you it's almost out of gas in that tank...my sending units are bad. It's pretty common on the 87-91 fuel systems, it changed in 92. I don't need them to tell me how much gas I have....only when I'm close to empty, which they do so I don't plan on fixing it.
Thx,I can understand about the dropping back, but going back up? I dont know, its still fairly acurate. I have a general idea when I'm about to hit empty so I leave it be,I don't have the time/know how/or tools to drop the tank, replace the sending unit,etc... If its a bad connection, whare are they at so I can check them? Thanks.
The fuel sender in my 1988 F150's rear tank has a printed circuit assembly solder trace board that has a contact that wipes across the solder traces to give me a fuel guage reading. The solder traces, similar to those on a computer circuit board, are wiped off of my sender in places. I assume this is what is causing the erratic reading of both of my fuel tank senders as well as my mom's 1989 E150's fuel tank senders. I just fill both tanks, reset my trip odometer and refuel at around 450 to 470 miles. My 5.0 gets about that many miles with a 17 front and 19 rear gallon capacity tank.
The only way to fix the problem is replace or have the senders replaced if they are found to be bad. Another user mentioned in another forum that his instrument cluster plug was loose in the rear of his instrument panel. He plugged it all the way in and his problems stopped but I would figure your problem is probably going to be the same as mine.
