Just had Flowmaster muffler installed today. It sounds a little ricey, which I expected. I know it will get better with time, but how much better. My previous truck was a 4.0 v6 Ranger I had the same thing done to it and it sounded better right from the start. Would a K&N Fipk or a Mac intake help with the sound?

it'll sound more hollow and throaty after awhile, and start giving a cool popping sound while the revs go down, ie revving or slowing down in gear (if you have 5spd). Other than that, don't look for too much more. You'll just learn to appreciate it more than it'll change sound.
The ranger 4.0v6 is a rad engine dude, i'm sure it sounded way cooler. some people have said that it's because the engine (4.2) is even firing, so we don't get the staggered pulse that other engines do. i think a v8 fires every 30 degrees of the crank rather than around 20 degrees in our engines.....whatever the hell that means!

an intake won't change how your exhaust sounds, but it'll definetly compliment it, and together it sounds pretty damn cool. I even had my cousin drive my truck by me and I liked the way they sounded together

I got my Flowmaster 40 Delta back last spring and love it. The sound is a little deeper then the first week I had it. They were selling either the chrome or stainless steel tips and, of course, I got the stainless steel. I didn't want the tips to be rusting out in a year or two and waste all that money.

when you dump it, or turn it down, its just pipe that bends straight down after the muffler.
Some emissions places may give you crap about it, not being able to get their stick in the whole. If you are worried about that, you can just put like, 9 inches of pipe on. I have about 5 or 6".
Or you can just take it elsewhere.....

Why don't you just do this...
You already have the FM so just go to a muffler shop and get them to cut off the piping directly after the muffler. That's also legal and the emissions can't do crap about it. Any muffler that is after the cab of the truck is legal as long as it's a legal muffler, and FM is legal. That will also give you a loud rumble. Then, if you don't like it, pay $15 to get a turn down.
