Well I finally dived in and installed the Pertronix Ignitor #1281 and the "Flamethrower" 40,000 volt coil for my 64. Smoothed out the idle and def. more power and better driveability. I bypassed the pink resistor wire because the new coil has the resistance built in - 1.5 ohm coil, won't burn out and likes the full 12 volts.
But, I wired the plus side to the ignition switch at some brass nut connectors, convenient. The truck won't start until I actually let off the key. I guess I need to terminate the wire at the old pink-wire resistance wire connector? Why is this?
It sounds like the terminal you used only has power in the run position and not in the start position. You could check with a test light to see if it has power when cranking.
When you bypassed the old wire you also bypassed the start circuit of the starter solenoid, therefore you only get power to the coil when the key is on, not when the engine is cranking over.
