ive got a 85 f250 4x4 with a inline 6 and a non-feedback carb.
when i bought this truck (a month ago) i noticed the spark plug wires were on the cap differently than in the haynes manual. so i changed them back to where they should be and now the timeing mark is on the wrong side. is this because someone installed the distributor wrong? im sure this carb and igntion was changed to an older style (from a feedback carb to non-feedback). it doesnt look like i can turn the distributor around because of the vaccume advance canister, so i guess my only option is to put the spark plug wires backwards again? is this safe?
you should put them back what some one did was use another port on the dizzy cap as the number one no big deal i did it to mine to make it easier i does not matter which one you pick for the number one as long as the rotor is pointing towards it when the dizzy is installed a tdc of the comp stroke
how do i know when its at #1? isnt there certain cylinders that fire at the same time? or should i crank the engine manualy untill the timeing mark lines up and check where the rotor is pointing?
Does it run both ways? Seems like the timing would be off. Probably is best to put it back the way it was as long as you can set the timing with it and it runs fine. There are no cylinders that fire at the same with distributors. Sounds like the distributor is on 180 degrees off. If that is the case, #1 should be straight across from where it is now. Line up the rotor so it is pointing toward the wire leading to ther #1 wire. Then move that wire to the one across from it and continue around with the firing order. Hope that helps. I may have confused it more.
Take the number one plug out rotate engine until the piston as at top. You can use a screwdriver but be very careful. Just as the piston starts back down the roter should be pointed to #1 plug wire.
To add to what Diamondjm7 is describing
pull the #1 plug.
Turn the engine by hand with a thumb over the #1 plug hole. When #1 is on compression you will feel pressure on thumb. Rotate by hand until timing marks line up and #1 piston is at top.
NOW line up plug wire on cap with rotor. That's #1. After getting this one, line up the rest of the wires in firing order.
