i decided to change both u joints on the front driveshaft in my '86 f-150 4x4 today. of course i pulled the old ones out without looking to see how they were installed. so i have two questions. my first question is which direction to install them. since they have grease fittings they have a raised line down the side with the fitting. is this supposed to face the driveshaft or away? my second question is about the c clips. when i put the squigly clips on the out side then the c clips dont fit on the inside. so can anyone tell me what im doin wrong and the right way to do it??? sorry this is so long but i need to get this fixed SOON.
I just bought u-joints for my F250 and they came with both types of clips just use the ones that fit your truck and always turn the grease fitting toward the driveshaft or you won't be able to grease it later. John

Ford uses a LOT of 1330 Spicer series u-joints, but, the joint is sold under three different configurations. The part # 5-213X has ONLY external snap rings, the 5-1203X has both inside & outside snap rings
, and finally , the 5-1204X is the 1330 Special that has outside snap rings BUT the 2 caps the belong on the pinion yoke are 1-1/8
and the other 2 caps or the normal 1-1/16 to fit in the driveshaft. The 1330 Special is strictly a rear most position u-joint for the rear shaft , but has been seen in other locations on a 4WD, from 1979 to about 95 or so. Just play close attention to the original cap sizes and there locations.

ive just replaced u joints on my 1996 f-150 but now i have a terrible vibration the u joints are set perfect and greased i think i have a balance problem and im confused i realy need help on this one .
It's very easy to overtighten the bolts on the u-joints. You think to yourself that you don't want these things coming loose, but if you tighten them too tight, it will squish the caps and lock the needle bearings up. Take the driveshaft out again, wiggle the joint all around to see if it moves freely, and then put it back in, and tighten them evenly and carefully, without over doing it. The book calls for 15 to 20 ft pounds. Maybe this will fix it.
