vacuum modulator

I have a 94 Ford Explorer with a 4.0 engine. My transmission has been low on fluid everytime I check it, and I have been finding ATF in one of my vacuum lines. I think the vacuum modulator must be bad. Can anyone one tell me where the modulator is located on the 94 Explorer? And how to access it. I can't see anything obvious from under the vehicle. Any help will be appreciated.

Vacuum modulator is on the passenger side of the transmission, right near where the catalytic converters are. I've heard there is an access panel underneath the passenger seat (have to remove the seat) for getting at the modulator.

I had a problem with the vacuum line and modulator on my '91 EXP in the fall. Since the 91-94 models are similar I would assume you can access the VM the same way I did. Pull back the carpeting on the passenger side and access the top of the transmission through an access panel on top of the transmission/drive shaft "hump" (centre of the vehicle). Getting at the VM is a tight fit from up top (or down below) but it can be done. There may be a panel below the seat but I got my VM changed over from the top without having to pull too much out (just the carpeting which comes out and goes back in relatively easy). You may need a torque wrench for the access plate.

Many threads on faulty VM are located in the FTE. Many FTE participants have noticed transmission fluid loss showing up in the engine due to faulty VM (through the vacuum line) so I think you are on the right track.

Cheap part but difficult to replace.

Also...VERY IMPORTANT...

Be very careful of the pin in the VM. There is a small pin that is not a replacement part that slides out when the VM is removed. Losing or damaging this can be a real problem (check other posts for clarification and further verification).

Good luck!

Gil
