I have a 74 F100 auto 302...The horn wont work....I have power at the steering wheel and power at the horn relay....the fuse is good...but cant seem to get the horn to honk...I can bypass the relay..and run a jumper to the horn and it will work...but I would like to push the horn button to honk the horn....HELP...PLEASE...thank you ...
Does the relay make a click sound when you push the horn button?
Try running a jumper wire from the horn ground wire (at steering wheel) to a good ground. There should be a wire at the rag joint grounding the column to the steering box. Often this is forgotten when repairs are done, and the horn loses it's ground.
The horn actually grounds through the steering column to the box. There should be a jumper wire accross the rag joint. Make sure it's still there and solid.
ok I had gotten info from 73 Custom,beartracks,&buzzbait65....but I still have a problem with the horn not honking...you guys have me confused...what the heck is a rag joint and where is it on my 73 F100??I looked all around the steer coulmn and a wire that connects the column to the steer box....couldnt even see where there might have been one....so here again everyone I am still in the dark....what color should this wire be....thanks again...blk964xbronc
A rag joint is part of your steering shaft,(where it comes out of the firewall) should be right before the steering box,two bolts a rubber disk shaped thing. I dont think it has anything to do with your horn working or not working though. Im not sure about the wire your looking for.
Cheers
do you have power coming out of the relay when you hit the horn button on the wire going to the horn, if not it sounds like a bad relay
....if there is no power coming through THE WIRE THAT GOES TO THE HORN(use test light) when you press the horn button, then the relay is bad or it is not getting ground (WHICH IT SHOULD)when pressing the horn button, check that then we can go from there. it is just a matter of eliminating everything from A to Z that might not be working

I have power to the horn ...and I put in a new horn relay...when I touch the horn button...it clicks thru thru the relay...but it still wont honk...whats next??
one more thing to check, is if the horn is getting a good ground, pull it, wire brush it, then reinstall.....if the relay is clicking and power is coming to the horn, there aint much else that i can think of, let us know
I changed my radiator support(that the horns mount to) and had a ground issue with my horns. has your horn ever worked? Try running a wire from the mount screw for your horn to the frame or maybe the neg on your battery if the horn works then make sure your radiator support is grounded.
Try having someone tap on the horn when you push the horn button if it honks you may have a pitch adjusting screw on the back of the horn you can adjust this screw a touch it may or may not be sealed with silicone or it might not be adjustable. Either way if you have power(12volts) at the horn it has to be a poor ground or faulty horn.
ok...the horn is working some of the time...when I turn the steer wheel in that direction...also...how do you get ground at the steer shaft??....mine doesnt have ground...like its dead metal...the prob with the horns ..they werent grounded to the apron..thanks to jad..ty..
That gives us enough infortmation to solve the problem
The problem is in your steering coloum I don't know the exact configuration of you coloum but I will tell you this there should be a wire coming out of the coloum that goes to the horn relay the other end of the wire goes into the coloum and should be attached to a spring loaded carbon brush holder the brush rides on a brass ring wrapped around the inside of the steering coloum. The problem is the carbon brush is worn out or the horn button is faulty, either way you are going to have to check for continuity from the horn button to the wire coming out of the base of the steering coloum. Always check all wirering under load (with voltage going through it) as continuity can be read with even just one tiny strand of wire load test will not lie if there is no voltage you know the circuit is no good even if you read continuity.
