I was saddened to see on the news that he died apparently tonight. Prostate cancer.
As a rather entrenched Law & Order fan, I find it'll be hard to find any character fill the void left behind by Det. Briscoe's departure last season. I was looking forward to seeing the new series that was supposed to start in January I do believe.
Those who say "it's only a character" .. Lenny Briscoe was meant to be played by an actor like Jerry Orbach. Dick Wolf could not have found a better match of actor to character.
I agree it sadens my to see him go, and while it isn't the same without him, I do say that his replacement fills the void that he left behind nicely, it was sad to see him go last year.

Think so? I'm of the "jury is still out" on Dennis Farina. His character doesn't have much in the "Been there - Done that". I don't think they could have written more into the Briscoe character, and how Orbach played it made it stand out. A recovering alcoholic, been thru more wives than anyone can count. Had an affair with a fellow police officer. Had a daughter killed by drug dealers. And a smart-aleck comment for almost any situation.
I saw a show about Broadway here a while back. There was Jerry Orbach singing in some musical--Sweeny Todd or something.... Never new much about him until that show, other than the gardening show Lawn Order. They had him interviewed about the Broadway days.... nice guy.
The first time I saw him was when my wife made me go with her to see Dirty Dancin' years ago. He played Jennifer Grays dad. Movie sucked, but he was cool. Too bad he's gone. I never will understand why people like that who must make good money and can afford to get some of the best medical attention die from something like that.

Likely it was a case of being "too late by the time it was diagnosed". Quickly mestacising (sp?) carcinomas have a habit of doing that. Your doctor can make you turn your head and cough once or twice a year and many times, men who get their PSA checked do that once maybe twice per year.
The other day my fiance and I were commenting that he doesn't look like he aged much since his role in Dirty Dancing. Then yesterday we heard that he died. He was a great actor and the reruns of Law and Order will mean much more to me now. My fiance and I both love that show. I got her hooked.
RIP Jerry!
I think I've seen every "Law and Order," right from the very first one. Jerry was one of the best, and I happened to see a rerun with him just last night. The wisecrack from that episode:
Jesse Martin: "If she had been 6 inches to the right, that shot would have missed her completely."
Jerry: "Yeah, and if Lincoln had been 6 inches to the right, he would have seen the end of the play..."
God speed, Jerry- you will be missed. I didn't think anyone could fill the shoes of Paul Sorvino when he left the show, but you did an outstanding job.
P.S. 2 Law and Order questions:
1) How do they make "the sound?" You know which one I mean.
2) Trivia question: why does the arrest occur almost exactly half-way through the show? There's a specific reason for this.
