The transfer case shifter broke on my 88 diesel when I was trying to take it out of 4 low. To get in 4 low was a task to begin with, and I don't know if it fully engaged. Feeling inside of the shifter boot, I can feel a flat piece at the end, but I couldn't see inside any of the holes in the mount for the boot and see what kind of screw is used, so I couldn't get the boot off. If anyone has any advice or suggestions, I would appreciate it.
had the same problem my self, the two small bolts broke off flush .didn't want to remove the whole thing so i tacked both sides with the mig ,easy to grind of if i have to .did it a year ago still there.in most cases the problem is caused by a shifterbecoming stuck to its bushing and pivot bolt.remove the bolt clean and grease will work like new
I got off the boot using a combo of simple green, surgical clamps (which come in handy a lot) to get out bits of junk, and an air hose to flush stuff out. After getting that off, I saw that where the shifter connects to, nothing was broken (yet) and after trying to bolt it back on with the proper nuts, the bolts didn't even break the surface of the other side of the shifter. I have no clue as to how it was connected. Then I tried to at least shift the transfer case into a gear, and the bottom bolt broke (link to pictures is below). As diesel-weasel said, the pivot point for the shifter seems to be stuck pretty good, so I am about to take that off and take care of it. If anyone knows how the thing gets connected properly, let me know, at least for curiousity, unless I didn't have the shifter completely flush with the linkage or something. Thanks all.
