i bought this truck last year 1996 f150 eddie bauer 4x4. The overdrive button on the shifter never worked. Whats a good starting point on fixing this problem? Is there another way to get it to stay out of overdrive other than the button? Would this involve pulling the steering wheel off? Thanks in advance...
Hi...
Havn't done it myself, but here are the instructions from the Ford Manual:
1. Remove the switch cover by inserting a thin screwdriver into the recess at the end of the selector lever and unsnapping the cover from the lever.
2. Insert a thin screwdriver into the slot on the switch and remove the switch by pulling switch out of the lever.
Does the switch actually not work, or does the light not come on? You should have to remove the steering wheel, but you will probably have to remove the steering column covers to get access to the wiring.
yeah the wires were cut, so i spliced them together but it still doesnt work. no light and no change in the transmission. So i guess ive got to replace the whole arm.
I had something like that on my explorer. My buckup lights and OD did not work turns out the fuse was blone. The OD and backup light was on the same fuse.
I have found this in two of my fords now (95 150 xlt, 95 explorer) and it has been the all in one switch connector wiring, (the main block that is attached to turn/wiper arm left side column)
carefully check all connections into this connector at the column, i think you will find a broken wire or loose connection at the connector, don't assume all is well because everything looks good at the connection, wiggle test them thoroughly!!!!!!
they seem to break or develop problems because of al the tilt up/down motion.
probably metal fatigue at the wire to connector.
check the o/d light and switch by pushing button repeatedly while moving column up and down you may find that it turns off and on in certain positions.
sometimes the o/d is switch still working fine but you just can't see the indicator light because of one broken lead up to the light on your switch.
do not replace this switch unless you have to, it is REALLY expensive.
I have only driven one truck that had this on the lever and this is the way it worked.
If the OD indicator said it was on, it was in OD when you got up to a certain speed.
You had to manually turn it off, and it stayed off as long as the key was on. If you stopped and returned and restarted the truck, it automatically re-engaged the OD function, even though you had it manually off before.
I see, I was concerned w/ the light going off [if the O/D is off] when you put it in drive...When its in park the light stays on...[ if its off] but when i put it in gear [drive] the light goes off......
