An FYI to all with a GEM module that shorts out...it's your windshield gasket. 4 yr old expy shorted out its GEM module in the rain a few months ago. Dealer failed to diagnose water problem and just swapped out a wet/rusted GEM module for $500. A few months later, same problem! Dealer said bad windshield gasket; 3rd one in 12 years in the business. I could not believe my Ford factory would do such a poor job so delayed the repair while looking into other possibilities. Lo and behold, my factory windshield is about 40% attached to the gasket and vehicle. NO PROBLEMS FOR FOUR YEARS; and then big problem. An FYI to all as their 00 gasket ages and dries out. New gasket $75...probably worth doing as PM before you end up frying your GEM module etc.
No this is the gasket that seals the glass to the frame of the vehicle, not the outer rubber you're seeing. The gasket is between the glass and the frame. The outer rubber is just pressed in; you can remove and replace it easily if you care to check on the gasket visually or with a garden hose. I have seen 2 other posts about the 00 gaskets failing causing GEM modules to fry. Hopefully it is just that model year...but I wish it had failed before the warranty ran out!
I just had to replace the fuse block and GEM module because the windshield is leaking on my '99 Expedition. $750 and it still doesn't run right. Now they tell me I have a bad coil pack on No. 4.
Kodakker, Yes it's a bead of glue; thick black stuff that I'm referring to as the gasket. Sorry about that.
Jsmart, I feel your pain on paying the dealer to be a component-swapper for you instead of a problem solver; these dealers have NERVE! My components dry out just fine and work fine, even when the windshield was leaky. Now that I'm dry for good, the formerly wet (and a bit rusted) components are working fine. Maybe yours will as well? $300 for new glass and lifetime warranty on the gasket...which was important to me having been burned by the Ford Motor Company.
i am almost positive that the GEM is my problem, because i also have a leaking windshield, and my truck has a mind of its own when it rains. It wont turn off when my even when i take the keys out. i have to disconnect the battery every time i park my car, it is getting on my nerves to say the least. But it is fine in dry weather, no problems at all. do i have to replace the GEM or just get my windshield sealed.
