[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-13-03 AT 01:45 PM (EST)]I have an 89 F150, 6cyl 4 speed manual trans, 4x4. Great truck, but I just broke the front right axle where the ujoint fits in, I was in 4 wheel high and got on some dry asphalt while making a turn. Looks like the ujoint failed and then tore the hole open. I need to replace the ujoint, axle, and possibly the spindle if it was damaged. I assume I need a special socket to disasemble the hub, but what about the axle? Does it just slide out once the hub is disassembled or are there C clips in the carrier? Anyone know what year trucks would donate the right parts? I have a junkyard nearby and can probably get the parts there. The front rear has an inspection cover like an 8.8 passenger rear. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have limited experience with fixing fords but have worked on many other cars.....just realized I posted in the wrong forum, but may as well leave it as I would think the 89 has a lot in common with the earlier stuff?
You will need a special socket to take the wheel bearings loose, after you get the 4wd hub off. It looks like a piece of pipe with little tangs on the end. When I pulled mine out, I had to take the spindle off so the shaft would slide through. This is by far the hardest part. After this, just pull the axle out. Make sure the splines and yoke are in good shape. These are famous for wearing out because nobody greases them. If you go to the junkyard, do the the same check. You can reach up and wiggle the shaft back and forth to see how wore out it is. I had to by a new axle and yoke from ford for mine. While you are in there, check your ball joints and anything else that might be questionable. This is a job you don't want to do too often.
This is how my wheel bearings were held in. If yours is like this, make sure you get it back right or the nuts could loosen, walk out, and damage your hubs.
Just went out to attempt this and wanted to double check things since this is my first ford axle change. My right axle broke at the ujoint mount for the spindle (out by the steering knuckle) but I see the axle also has a slip joint on the inboard side before it goes to another ujoint and then finally the carrier assy (shown well on the above pics). Do I have to pull the front cover and remove the C clip from the carrier and remove the complete axle assembly, or will just the outer half of the axle slide out of the slip joint section? Do I need to remove the keystone clamps and boot to get this apart, or maybe just the outer clamp to release the boot? I really dont want to have to get into the differential if I dont have to just because it is freezing out and the less work in this cold the better. If the cover has to come off I may be waiting till spring!
