remove and replace pwr steering gearbox

i am wondering how much of a task it is to do this on an 86 f-150 2wd w/pwr steering...the lower sector shaft seals leak like a bucket with a hole in it and i was told even if i just tried to change the sealds there is a chance that the shaft or whatever in side may be warn out so much it will leak after the new seals..so i was told my best bet is a different gearbox...i have limited tools and no garage to werk in...any info would be appreciated

remove and replace pwr steering gearbox

Hey Pancake,
I had a mechanic friend of mine replace the lower seals in my '73 mustang's gearbox. He said it's pretty common for them to wear out (seal) but there's usually no shaft wear to speak of. Seems like it would be easier on a truck, but I can't say since I've never done it.

Good luck

Chuck

All it takes is a 12-point wrench to fit the bolt on the rag joint, a cheap pitman arm puller ($8 @ Harbor Freight or free rental from your local parts store), the wrench for the 3 bolts on the frame in the front wheelwell, flare-nut wrenches for the line fittings, & a few quarts of Type F ATF. I also recommend Anti-Seize Lubricant & an inline filter. There's only 1 way it can be reassembled, so don't worry about marking everything, but DO plan on getting it aligned when you're done. Firestone will give you lifetime alignments for ~$100.

The hardest part I thought was getting in to get to the rag joint. But I think on your truck it might be easier to get to. I never had to have my truck realigned. I made sure the new gearbox was exactly in center. With everything hooked up but the pitman arm I cut the wheel till it stops and counted the revolutions. From a perfectly level (straight) steering wheel it was exactly two turns right and two turns left. If it ain't exact move it over a few teeth at the ragjoint. This makes sure your steering wheel is lined up correctly. Then connect the pitman arm. It is splined in such a way that it lines up easy. It overall was not hard to do but it is not the greatest weather to be out trying to do this. I might be confusing you but I hope this helps.
