I bought a used 2004 Excursion XLT, from my local dealer for a good price. It has 5.4L, 4x2, travel package and leather. I am trying to get the DVD player to work through the speakers, but it doesn't. The only way I ma able to listen to the DVD player is to use the wireless headsets. Could someone who purchased new please confirm the correct way the player is suppoesed to work. When I use th emedia select buttin for the wired headsets, it only shows, FM1, FM2, AM, and CD Shared, no AUX or DVD. The new car sales team seems to think it should work through the speakers, but they do not have any left. If you have an 04 or 05 excursion with DVD, please help. I would like to get this corrected. My previous vehicle, a 2002 Windstar limited did work through the speakers, and I thought this should too. Thanks in advance for your help.
Mine will display "DVD/CD", then if you press the headset button it will switch between "DUAL PLAY" which is dvd on headset, normal on speakers. Or "SINGLE PLAY", dvd over speakers. If yours doesn't, something is wrong, take it to the dealer, its under warranty.
Also, if you press the 3 and 5 preset buttons together, that will enable/disable the headset option. You can only press the headset button to activate "dual play" or "single play" when the headset option is enabled. It is confusing and not documented well. anyway, hope this helps. Keep us informed.
Thank you for your help, I will keep you all updated. Is this information in the DVD manual or in the Excursion user manual. I cannot find it in the Excursion manual.
My 2004 Excursion has just the opposite problem of only playing the DVD through all the speakers and not through headphones. The problem I finally tracked down was the rear seat controls or headphone controls. This part was malfunctioning and not letting my unit go to dual play mode so yours may be stuck in dual play mode and playing DVDs only through headphones. This part is easy to replace since it is plug and play ready. I discovered this by taking one out of my friends Excursion and swapping it with mine. Then mine worked great on evey feature. So I swapped them back and I am in the process of getting a new one. They cost $95 from a dealer but I am looking for another way to find one perhaps a salvage yard?
Quick update: The dealer now says that the DVD unit was not factory installed and therefore not covered under warranty. I want to get this writing from them, as I have a friend at the Kentucky truck plant that can run my VIN.
dannoklos: I can switch to and from dual play, it just will not play through the speakers. Try eBay, I have found some pretty cool stuff on there for the eX's
I have the opposite problem. I can hear the DVD through the speakers just fine but I have to plug in wired headphones if I want to go to "Dual Play". I have tried everything I can think of and I can't figure it out.
Update: I found out through the factory that the DVD unit was, in fact, factory installed. The quality person called the dealership and I have an appointment on Wednesday to take the x back in. I will update you as to the progress. Thanks again for your information and support.
I think that the problem may be resolved, it appears that wrong radio was installed in my unit at some time. They are looking at how to get the right radio.
Finally fixed after 2 months of arguing with the idiots in service. It is done, the new radio finally came in and was installed. The audio works through the speakers and sounds great. Would be nice if the front passengers could listen to the radio while the rear passengers listened to the DVD, but I will fight that battle another day, unless anyone has any suggesstions. Thank you again for all of your help, I really appreciate it!

You can do this via "dual play" when the rear passengers use the headphone jack (and the do make adapters that convert one jack into two). I do it all the time with my factory installed dvd. The kids watch/listen to "Dora" on the dvd and I listen to talk radio up front.
