I have the dreaded TFI Ignition in my 84 f150 with the 4.9. I have read other posts about replacing it, but I am wondering what would that entail. I know the distributor would have to go, but is there any thing else that would have to be replaced too like the computer. Is there a kit out there to do this? Any help would be appreciated.
- duraspark 2(DSII) dizzy (vaccumm advance)
-DSII coil
-DSII engine harness, off any size motor or ford vehicle, doesn't matter
-DSII igniton box (mounts on inner fender)
- Non feedback carb, 81 or earlier
no worry about the computer, just unplug and leave it there. THe engine harness plugs right in on the fenderwell where the old one is
Wow that sounds easy 74. So are you saying that the computer will no longer be functional? It wont be needed for any other purpose? If so it would just eliminate another expensive part as well as the dreaded TFI module. Are you also saying that i wont need to change the distributor?
The swap is quite easy, I just kept the same coil that was already on it. I also didn't use the wiring harness, just wired it up directly. do a search and there is tons of information on here. That's where I learned how to do it.
My '86 had the TFI and it really wasn't a problem. My feed back carb was a POS and I decided to change out both to get rid of the carb. I did the DS II / GM HEI module hybrid ignition and a Motorcraft 2150 2V carb with a Clifford heated maifold and I couldn't be happier.
Oscar, I thought all 86's had fuel injection. They actually had those darn feedback carbs that late? What exactly is this DS II / GM HEI module hybrid ignition. Is this ford or aftermarket? That heated manifold sounds sweet. Where did you get that?
I just paid out about $800 for a new replacement manifold on this beast.
on inlines it ran in 86 models....DSII and hei is basically runnnin the hei spark setup because of the reliabilty of tehm and can be easily wired in.
I had tons of probs with the tfu because the guy that had the truck before poked each wire to test them and basically ruined it plus many other wires. The carb is just pita to get parts for or adjust properly. This is a very easy swap and just let me know if ya have probs....could easily be done in a day taking your time
Got a question:
I found a 2150 2v carb that I want to get but this carb is a 2 barrel and my existing feedback carb is a single barrel. I am almost positive that this 2150 carb wont fit my existing manifold. Is it possible that this 2150 2v carb will fit this clifford heated manifold that this thread refers to for my 4.9??
Also is it possible to add a heater to my existing manifold?
Thanks for the help
That's correct a 2v (2-bbl) will not directly bolt to your stock manifold. You can get an adaptor from clifford to bolt a 2V to a stock manifold it's about $50. If you get a clifford mainfold, it requires a 2V or 4V adaptor - it depends which carb you chose.
Yes you can add water heat-indirectly-to your stock manifold. There are heated carb plates that will bolt between your carb & manifold adaptor; however, with the air cleaner, carb, heated plate, & adaptor it's getting pretty tall and that's a lot of force on the two little carb bolts.
If you keep your stock exhaust manifold, you don't need water carb heat - carb heat comes from the connection of the exhaust and intake manifolds.
My '84 six has the original TFI module on it. It has never done anything except shock the ##** out of me once when I accidentally 'found' a bad spark plug wire! This truck has 310k on it, and is still going strong! Drove it yesterday, in fact.
