(And, no, not that kind of jacking!) I need to take the transmission out, so I need the thing way up off the ground. But if I put jackstands in the place they show in the manuals, "frame rails???", its not really high enough for me to get under there comfortably. I'm leery of putting them under the control arms, or using wood blocks, etc. Any suggestions? I have ramps and 4 jackstands.
OK I'll try it like that. Going to start on it tommorrow, so I'll have the 3 day weekend to get it out and start taking it apart. At least my engine runs good! I'd hate to try to take THAT out. And when I get the the transmission fixed, then I need to replace the valve cover or headgaskets (leaking like crazy) So this wonderful little van should keep me busy for quite a while.
Came home from work, and got the van up, ramps in front, jackstands under the axle. Lot more room than just the front on ramps by itself! Got the driveshaft out, starter off, disconnected all the wires and stuff. Hope by tom. night to have the trans. on the bench so I can start taking it apart and try to see what's wrong with it. I'll probably be on here asking all kinds of questions! Thanks.
1) When you do the valve body, make sure you tag everything that comes out of each bore and note the orientation also. It is absolutely necessary to take pictures of all the components with their orientation clearly marked. Otherwise, it's easy to put things in backward.
2) To change the seal on the linkage, you must remove the linkage. In order to do so, you need to pull a retention pin from the case (you'll know when you have the thing apart). DON'T brute force it trying to pull it out with pliers. There is only a tiny bit to grab on (about 1/8") and if you screw it up, you'll have to guesstimate the other end and drill the case to knock it out. Fortunately, if you take a punch and tap it lightly SIDE-TO-SIDE, that will loosen it up so you can pull it out with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Remember, if you feel a lot of resistance, tap it again. Don't squeeze too hard on the pliers.
Take your time. Don't hurry and you should be OK. If you get stuck, don't try anything drastic, just post here and we'll try to help you out. I have done 3 of these trannies already, and only the first one is badly mangled but I managed to get it fixed with a combination of prayers and JB weld.

Not to forget not to take the front pump apart unless you have the special aligenment tool needed to put it back together.
Also when you remove the giant snap ring it will only go back in right one way. One side is flat and the other is sloped.
Well, after six hours worming around on my back, I finally got the thing out without too much trouble. Ready to clean it up and start disassembling. I failed to mention whats wrong: no 3rd or 4th gear. And a huge bang when it goes in reverse. I already tried a rebuilt valve body, but that didn't help. Hope it didn't get contaminated. The fluid, which has been changed 3 times already, is extremely dirty. has all this black stuff in it. Anybody have a guess what the problem might be? I'm not going to touch the pump. Hoping theres just some broken part, or clutch failure, and all I need is a rebuild kit and a few parts(and new TC). And oh yes, somebody named Larry wrote his name on the top with the date 3-23-01. Maybe larry didn't do too good a job since its broke again 3 years later.
This is where I bought the parts to rebuild the two A4LD transmissions I had http://www.bulkpart.com/
Good Heavy-Duty Parts and they cost me less than a Third what the Local Transmission Shop was going to charge me for the parts.
Here's an update on my transmission project: I've taken it all apart, and basically the OD assembly is all trashed, and the forward clutch pack is really burned up. Gonna need a bunch of new parts. I am considering buying a junkyard tranny and seeing if there's any parts I can get from it, but I think that might be a waste of time and money. Any suggestions?
