I have seen several posts here about swapping to a bigger distributer cap, rotor and bigger wires (not recently though), but haven't been able to find the specifics involved.
Is this applicable to my '75 390 w/ electronic ign? What parts do I need to ask for to make this work? I want to do this to make the best use of an Accel Super coil that I already have.
I recently found a crack in the current cap, so this would be the time to do it. Are the lifetime warrenty Bosch wires any good?
Thanks,
Dave
hey dave you just need to ask for a late model cap, rotor, and cap adaptor. something from a late model 302 or 351 (it still fits). ive done the same upgrade to mine. as for the bosch wires i dont know, ive got the premium napa set on mine. good luck.
I just bought a spacer, Accel cap and rotor for a 90 model 5.0 mustang. The problem is the rotor doesn't come close to fitting the distributer shaft and the spacer has 2 screws to hold it on the dizzy. The link in the post above used the clips on the dizzy to hold the spacer on. My dizzy looks exactly like the one in that link. Did I just get the wrong parts or what?
Dave, you got too new of a cap and rotor. Those are for a TFI type distributor that has no advance, the distributor is different. Get a cap and rotor for the year cleanLX said.
Problem around here is that junkyards that stuff gets snatched up right away. What year could you get brand new at the parts store and can you recomend a possible brand, also a type of plug wire and plug to complete ethe set. Im in dire need of a tuneup and i have the buzzing in the radio that gets louder as the engine reves higher.
The parts you need fit a wide variety of years (77-?) and models (all) with the 302 engine. Following is one sample that should work:
Application: 1977 F-250 w/302 (5.0L) engine
Distributor Cap - Standard FD168 (aluminum terminals), FD168X (copper terminals)
Cap Adapter - Standard FD156
Rotor - Standard FD117 (reg. grade), FD117X (high grade)
Spark Plug wires - Standard 6880, AC-Delco 16808U, Bosch 09771
As for spark plugs, get whatever set fits your truck. I have not had good luck with Champion or Autolite. Motorcraft, AC, NGK, and Denso have worked well for me. YMMV. It is possible that you might have to adjust one heat range up or down after you make this change. If you do, keep within the same brand as different brands of spark plugs seem to have slightly different heat ranges for the same application.
Good luck with the switch, it should be beneficial but I didn't really notice any difference when I changed mine.
