Post Passed Smog Check!

The '94 302 with 119,000 miles just passed with flying colors.

Hydrocarbons = 10 PPM and CO = 0.00%!

Not bad on the original cats and O2 sensor.

I did a recent tuneup with the following parts:

Purolator air filter and PCV
Bosch single platinum spark plugs
Ford Motorsport 9mm plug wires
Accel distributor cap and rotor

I also ran a bottle of Chevron Techron thru one tank of gas, used premium gas and brought it in hot for the test.

airborne! i participated in a conversation recently about blow by contaminating the intake charge on engines with 100k or more on the odometer. thus causing an engine with lots of miles to fail due to the blow by. you must have taken really good care of the old 5.0l.

Compression tests within 5% of 160 on all eight, so there is not much blowby. Actually this was a phone company truck that I have only owned a year and a half. GTE (Verizon) had a reputation for neglecting service. The transmission and rearend were shot. I guess Ford just built a real good engine.

I just passed my local smog check with 33 HC ppm @ idle and 26 HC ppm @ 2500 RPM. I have a 351W in a 90 Bronco. Passed the CO with a 0% as well.

I'm up next with my 93 @ 114,000 miles. Damn California smog checks.

So far I've passed with flying colors, knock on wood.

I don't know why, but my truck still passes the CA emissions tests... I am pushing 200k... How does this happen?

i think the engine control system (eec) is whats allowing these engines to last and perform so well. the eec system is really a high tech system. if you keep the ignition system current and don't monkey with the cats, 150k seem to be the norm. do any of you guys run synthetic oils. what intervals are you changing the fluids.

I'm using Chevron Delo 15W40 and a 5000-6000 mile change interval. It's possible that it has been getting 15W40 all of its life, since big fleets here in the southwest often use Delo or Rotella for all trucks, gas or diesel. The higher phosphorus content of the heavy-duty oil is supposed to harm the cats. If you don't burn any oil, that can't happen.

My previous truck was a V-6 Chevy. From new, it used oil. It was always borderline on passing smog checks.

I've been using Mobil One and changing my oil every 3,000 but have started running to oil to 4,000 the last couple of oil changes.

Also have an MSD 6A ignition module one the truck. I unplug before I have it smogged.

I've also had the EGR valve unplugged the last few months, suppose I'll have to plug that back in for this stupid smog test.

It does, the truck run soooo much better with the EGR out of the loop that I've just been ignoring the check engine light. After I get through this smog check I'll build a blocking plate then hook the EGR vacuum line back up.

I'm soooo scared..today I'm getting mine smogged, with a semi-clogged cat, I just hope it works to my advantage because I can't afford getting new cats put in right now. I love living here in California but the laws and regulations stink

Wait until they phase in smog check II. The current smog check is pretty easy to pass, they check your car at idle then at 2000 or 3000 rpm. Of course this is all done with the transmission in neutral so it doesn't come close to real driving conditions. Smog check II will put your vehicle on a tread mill and will be tested under a load. The failure rate will be much higher.

Next truck is gonna be a diesel!

Wow, they've used the "treadmill" thing here in Washington for a long time now. Seems weird that California didn't have that first.

My 95 5.8 with 109K passed with flying colors when I had it licensed after buying it out-of-state. Only later did I actually look under the thing and find out that the previous owner had removed the cats. I guess it's a good thing they didn't do a visual.
