Smile Remote Start

I just bought a new Ford F350 6.0 and I was wonderign if you guys knew if Ford offered a remote start for the truck or not. Do any of you boys out there with remote start like it or hate it or is it worth it? How does the 6.0 like it? haha

Remote Start

I bought the Ford Gold system for my F-250 KR 6.0 a few weeks ago.

I was going to install it myself until I saw all of the freaking wires. Anyway I took it to a place Ford recommended for the install and it works great.

It is a little tough to get the hang of the setup process (lots of counting horn honks and flashing lights), but once you do you can change nearly everything to your liking.

I work on the 50th floor of the building can can remote start my truck in the parking lot a block away. Takes me about 10 minutes to get to the truck and by then she's lubed up and ready to go. (It is safe too. If some how someone got into the truck while it was running...there is no way you are going anywhere with it.)

I didn't do much research after I found out Ford had worked with PowerCode to make an alarm/remote start to their specifications. I figured there would be less problems that way. I'm sure there are plenty of good systems out there, some even better than the Gold. But I'm happy with what I got and how it works.

The new has worn off a bit, but I still hardly ever get in the truck that it is not already running. It also has a feature I use all the time where you can leave the vehicle running but take your keys out if you have to run back in the house for something. If nothing else that should add years to the starting system.

Good Luck

Is that Gold system offered at my local ford dealership and is it backed by Ford? Also does it work with the security system that is currently on the truck from ford? I dotn want alot of key fobs to lug around.

RE: Remote Start

Is that Gold system offered at my local ford dealership? -- Yes, that is where I got mine.

Is it backed by Ford? -- Yes. Page12 of the manual says "Ford Motor company will repair or replace.............

Also does it work with the security system that is currently on the truck from ford? I don't want alot of key fobs to lug around. -- You get two new 4-button key fobs that replace your current units (they look like the ones you got with the truck but have an extra button for starting the truck). The old ones will still work, but have limited use.

I just recieved a bronze system for my F-250, and a gold system for my F-350 as christmas gifts. I installed them a few days ago and let me say this-

First off, it is well worth the money. The warm-up capabilities with the diesel are great, the extra security system is great, and it is simply fun to play with.

I will warn you...just as Rick stated, the wiring is a nasty job. The bronze system was bad enough- the gold one was horrible. There are about 15 wires with the bronze setup, where as with the gold you have 2 10 pin connectors, and 1 24 pin connector that must be wired in. Takes a good 5 hours.

If anyone ventures to try it themselves, make sure you have a good multimeter handy- you will need it.

Rick,
I just installed the rke/rmst system on a 2004 F350 6.0. and I was wondering if you use the start delay of 30 seconds for your diesel. 30 seconds seems a little long, but I don't believe there is any increment between 0 and 30.

thanks

Todd

I would say 95% (maybe 99%) of the time I use the remote to start mine....
I think my Ford gold is set for about a 30 second delay....
(but I've never really timed it.... since I'm usually away from the truck when I start it...)

And it really doesn't matter to me how long it waits to start, just so long it is long enough after all, I'm not at the truck waiting on it

Well..........I went ahead and had the AstroStart installed today. Give me a few weeks to figure things out. Talked to my dealer about the Ford Gold, they are not really up on the remote starters around here in Ohio.

The Alaska Ford owners talk about AstroStart. I found a dealer in Michigan who installed mine.....$400 plus tax

So far so good......

I tried both and it started just fine. When the temp is in the 30s my glow plug light stays on for about 10 seconds. When warmer it stays on for about 4 seconds.

If I could I would set it on a 10 or 15 second delay, but the only option is 5 or 30. I think I will stick with 30 for now, but might change this summer.

PS – 30 seconds seems like forever when you’re standing there watching your truck doesn’t it.

you dont have to hold the button down for 30 seconds do you.... or do you just push the button and it waits the seconds and then starts it????

i would imagine you just push the button... but who knows...some things arent always what they seem..

You just hit the button and it starts the sequence. Either default, which is like 5 seconds, or you can set it to wait 30 seconds. The truck I put it on is a 2004, and it doesn't need anywhere near 30 seconds before the light goes off and it can be started. So I was wondering if there is any harm in waiting after the light goes off for 30 seconds to start it. I mean, do the glow plugs cool off in that time? I'm no diesel expert.

It is my understanding that the glow plugs actually stay on for about 2 min after the light of the dash goes out anyway...no harm.
