I have a 1998 Ranger XLT extended cab 2WD with the 4.0 liter v6 5 speed automatic. I bought it stocked with the 15" chrome wheels with the Firestone P225 70 R15 tires.
Question: I want to put P235 75 R15 tires on it. Has anyone done this and/or is this acceptable without any modifications? I see Explorers with those size tires everday.
Won't help your handling, in fact will detract from it. Your speedometer and odometer will be on the low side and you might invite speeding tickets. Can't imagine why you would want to do this. Most go the other way for handling.
Will give you a taller tire but not necessarily a wider tire. The performance tires get "shorter" where there is less flex in the tire. This is where you get into the 16" and 17" tires. They allow a "taller" tire but a smaller sidewall to aid in the handling. You should probably discuss this with an honest tire dealer. Another excellent place is "tirerack.com" They have a ton of information and comparison information there. And their prices are great as well.
I say screw those small tires. I just put brand spanking new BFGoodrich tires size 31x10.50 R15 on my 94 Ranger Splash. They look awesome and they fit no problemo. They dont rub at all. If you want to fix the speedo problem then go to your local Ford dealership and tell them you want a "speedo gear" for a Ranger with the tall tire option ( LT265/75 R15). No speeding tickets for me.
i gotta 99 2x4 supercab
i put 31x10.50 Michelin XCX/APT allterrains
they have great mud traction, they work better than some mudterrains
they fit perfect on my 15x7 Chrome Cragar SS
and on your truck the speedo adjustment is gonna be done by computer not a gear, most likely, but yea jus go to the local ford dealer and u should have no problem gettin it done
No speedo gear on a 98 model....needs to be stealership reprogrammed unless you know someone else (speedo shop) that can do that for you.
235/65/15 would match up with no noticeable difference...maybe a few rpms/mile which isn't worth thinking about.
215/75/15 will also match up with no changes needed.
I guess I'm going 235/75/15 this week, but since I only drive home from the dock every few weeks, maybe some cheapo Pep Boys tires will hold me over. Need to get a speedo gear though .
