i am not sure if the trucks use the same 3.0l i have in my97 taurus, but i have a problem and need help so i turn to this forum. i post in the heavy duty, and 7.3 forum, anyhow on the way to church christmas eve, i look in the mirror and all i see is steam.ok must have blown a hose. so today i get a chance to get it in my garage and look. the front freeze plug is blown but it is not the standard type dish plug. nor is it a aftermarket expandable. it looks like a .25 or .3125 hole in the middle. the back one is the same way but has a "plug" in the middle. this plug in the freze plug is missing on the front hensce the coolant loss. has anyone had this problem and must the cmplete plug be replaced? thanks jack k
If your Taurus 3.0L is the OHV "vulcan" engine (8th digit in the VIN is "U" or "2"), then indeed it is the same 3.0L engine as that used in the Ranger.
Unfortunately if that's the case, it sounds like your Taurus might be experiencing the dreaded "Brown Coolant Syndrome" which is very serious problem that should be addressed immediatly. Some helpful links can be found in this previous post of mine:
thanks for the reply, but i dont think thats the case
my antifreeze always looked good and green.the car has 70k on it and never any serios problems. then blow this fusible plug out i cant explain. i am going to ford tomorrow after work and see what the deal is. i will keep you posted.i have searched the web after i posted here and see alot of forums where there is freeze plug problem. now this plug that blew may be a problem in itself. most people just take it to the garage and get bent over.why is this plug and the one on the other side of the block , different than anyother type of core plug? we will find out. jack k

The clean coolant is surely a good sign. Let us know what you find out.

rockledge i want to thank you for your help, and for posting the TSB. turns out that being the second owner and buying this car from a ford dealer the update was already installed.the oddball core plugs are replaced ford expandable type( not like what you buy at local parts store). in the TSB it states those two plugs must be removed to do the chem flush. there is also a pic in the TSB wich shows what it looks like. now the nut fell off and the bolt and "clamp" had to be removed from inside the block with a magnet. now all i have to do is get another install and refill. then mama will be happy again. glad the kids dont have to go to school. now she will also leave my diesle alone. thanks again jack k
