Having 2 batteries would keep everthing saved, but pulling out the manual to reprogram everything has always been standard procedure. (on some older cars i have encoutered the radio will not operate unless you key in a radio code after battery disconnect----I guess that was their way of making stolen radios useless-because no-one would know the code except the owner with the manual)
Which computer? Typically any computer will reset to the default settings. The ECM (Electronic Control Module) is a dynamic device that adjusts the air/fuel spark/ timing to current conditions like engine temp, ambient temp, barometric pressure, to name only a few. So it needs a starting place (default settings) in which to begin ignition/starting sequence until it gathers the data and responds accordingly.
On other internal memory storing modules in the car you will loose programmed radio stations, seating memory positions, alarm lock settings, gas mileage accompishments, door lock codes?etc.
One way of not losing any of your setting is to hook up a battery charger to the negative and positive wires going to your battery. Just be careful that is does not get disconnected while it is disconnected from the battery. Get some electrical tape to hold it in. I recently had my battery replaced on my 97 expe and my remote door locks did not work until I drove the drive for a little bit. In general, car computers reset itself once you start driving it.
I literally just read about this but can't give you much detail as I don't have enough details myself. The basic factory settings will be fine but you will lose some programmed functions (I'm sure this is what you are concerned with). You can buy a battery backup (gizmo that hooks up through accessory adapter), 9 volt, I believe, that will keep all functions in memory, including radio preset, door codes, etc. I am looking into more detail as I write...
Will post as soon as I figure it out. Anyone else, post up if you know what I am talking about....
