Looking to get a explorer

Hi all,im looking to get a 90's explorer,96-98,now i dont know much about the explorers but ive heard some models came with a v8,is that optional? or did it come standard on some years?thanks in advance for any info

If the V8 came standard on Explorers, it was only in the last year or so. '96+, the V8 was optional. Pre-'96 Ford only offered the 4.0 OHV.

I have a '99 - the v8 was an option. I believe the 4.0 sohc was also an option, the standard engine was the 4.0 ohv.

The v8 was standard in the mercury mountaineer, the twin to the explorer.
