Fuel Filter or Separator

1977 F-250 4x4
400 Engine, C-6 Trans
Fuel tank behind the seat

If I follow the fuel line out of the tank, it drops down on the drivers side of the truck and thru the floorboard. It then turns and heads towards the front of the truck and the fuel pump. A couple of inches from where it comes thru the floor is a round metal cannister that looks like a fuel filter. It is held to the bottom of the floor by a metal bracket.

My question is this, is this a fuel filter, or a fuel water separator?. I have looked at both LMC and Auto Krafters catalogs, but did not find a pic to help. Advance Auto Parts lists a fuel SPEARATOR that looks somewhat like this, but I was not sure.

I do have the metal screw in filter at the base of the carb as well.
Here is a picture of what they show. The part on the truck is metal, with the lines entering and exiting the center of the barrel. It has rubber lines that attach to each side, then they return to metal.

Based on your info (400 engine) I'ld have to go with filter.
Water separators are critical for diesels as they are very unforgiving when it comes to attempting to compress water.
