Exclamation Compressors Purpose?

under the hood of my good ol 84 f250 351, there is what i see as the compressor, looking at the truck from the front its on the very top left of the motor, and the wierd thing is theres no belt on it! Is this bad? Should i fix it?
And whats its purpose? And i notice nothing while driving down the road!

I need replies! PLEEZ

Eric

That would be the air pump, it pumps air into the cats, so if its not connected the cats will run hotter, and burn up quicker. it may make it run smoother, mines disconnected and i'm gonna fix it and see if it makes a difference

Look at the sticker on the radiator support. It will say something like "5.8liter, catalyst, air"etc. and it will have a diagram of the hook-ups to the air pump. The sitcker will tell you what it had on it. If the fuel guage says "unleaded fuel only" and you have the small opening on the filler neck of the gas tank, then it did have a convertor on it at one time. I would be surprised if it didn't have a cat on it, unless it came from Canada.

I have an 86 F-250 Heavy Duty model and it's non-catalyst from the factory. If your truck is a non-catalyst truck as well, having the AIR pumps disconnected won't hurt your truck one bit.

As stated, that is your air pump. It did have a belt from the factory. I imagine a previous owner disconnected it for one of two reasons: It was going bad/was bad, or they thought it would run better without it.

ya we have an 85 f-250 300 that was factory noncatalyst. it has an air pump that hooks into a tube that blows air into each cylinders exhaust. heavier duty trucks didnt have to have convertors inthe mid 80's.

i'ts possible the pump seized and the belt snapped off, that would explain the missing belt.

mine f250 has the same setup..

factory non-catalyst. has air pumps to pump air into the exhaust to burn more junk.

Not hazardous at all. In fact, as long as a visual inspection isn't part of your emissions test(if you have one at all), you can remove the air pump.
