So, we spent X-mas eve moving snow from in front of the bays. I figured i would brush up on the operations of the Unimog we have w/ bucket. It would not lock in four wheels drive. So we we got it stuck we had to pull it out with a M931. Four hours of moving snow and we still were not through to the street. Merry Christmas, all.
You've got one of those? I saw a couple for sale at a state auction years ago and they looked like the ultimate 4x4. In 4 wheel drive is it possible to get one stuck? Can you get parts for them?
The 6-wheel drive is (was) the M561 Gama Goat. I can assure you that these CAN be stuck. While in the Army at Ft. Stewart, GA, the Signal platoon stuck their M1009 CUCV (Chevy Blazer) in a swamp. Went in after it with the Gama Goat. Sunk it, too. Came back again with their 6x6 5-ton wrecker and stuck that one, too.
They called for help, and 70th Armor brought out their M88A1 tank recovery vehicle. That has a winch capable of pulling a main battle tank out of the muck. They set up a few hundred feed away, and attached the cable to the wrecker and pulled the whole string clear without even revving the engine above an idle.
Usually it's the Mog that DOESN'T get stuck and is there to rescue everyone else....congratulations on a job well done! You should send a pic to one of the 4x magazines!
To Howdy...... You can get Mogs and parts fairly easily...There are several importers (one in Georgia, one in AZ, one in Arkansas and another in Denver) Most carry parts or can get them for you.....Some of these guys also have Pinzgauers, tanks and other cool military vehicles.) There are alot of 404s out there (6-cyl gas) from the 60's and early to mid '70's.....I think they go about50 MPH Max...But I've heard that the 406's and 416's with the Mecedes Diesel engines are far superior....I've even seen a few of all varieties equiped with "fast-axles" for better highway use. I would like to own a dozen one day....

They've got one of those Mogs' down at the Freightshaker/Sterling dealer. I believe you can get them with a Cummins 6 or a Mercedes diesel. Not sure if they offer a gas one anymore.
I can't imagine you want to go too fast in one of those...
Actually, a Mog is very stable, even though they look top heavy. One of the contractors in the yard had a brand new diesel mog. I asked them how much, the owner told me about $130k. So much for buying one and thrashing it out in the woods.
You can still get a used mog for under $25,000.....the 404's from back in the late 60's (6-cyl gas) can be had for as little as $6500....and the 406's and 416's form the '70's (all diesel) can be had for about $11,000 + depending on what all has been added....There used to be a site called Unimogwherehaus(dot)com that sold refurbished Doka's.
