Overdrive and cold weather

Anyone else notice their 4R100 not wanting to go into O/D in cold weather until it warms up? Seems to shift just fine otherwise....

I think in general the computer's strategy is to stay in lower gears (higher revs) until the engine is warmed up.

I've noticed the same thing with my E40D in my '97. I have also noticed that when it's cold, the T/C doesn't lock up until much higher RPM's are realized.

The info found on this site and in some manuals tell us that the TC and/or OD won't lock up till a specific oil temp is reached. I think the number is 54*. I live about 1 mile from I-10 so I just crank it up and EASE off. I just run at less than 1800 until the temps come up then everything locks up and then just carry on.

The locking out of overdrive is a common strategy of many vehicles and IIRC even some non computer OD transmissions behind non computer engines had switches and wiring to keep the car out of OD until the engine heated up.

the tranny is in overdrive, the converter just isn't locked yet. I dont know the specific number. I let mine idle in the driveway for about 10 minutes and the 97 will usualy lock up. but if it realy annoys you that it doesn't lock up, cuz it realy annoyed me, try this.

It doesn't particularly annoy me (it usually locks up shortly after I get my coffee), I was just wondering if that particular trait is normal.....

Normal with mine. I just take it easy till she's warmed up. After she locks up the first time every thing is back to normal.
