Diesel leak

Diesel fuel leak started yesterday outside temp. 36 F. Leak was from tube on front right side of eng. which terminates about the oil pan seam about 6" back from front of eng. Looks like an open tube / drain? We were getting ready to travel about 100 mi. for Christmas with family and did not have time to look very closely. Does anyone have any ideas? Truck has 150,000 and this is the first problem that has stopped me from driving it.
By the way Merry Christmas to All

That pipe you are describing is the fuel filter drain tube.
Check the fuel filter drain valve at the base of the fuel filter.
I can't explain why it would just start leaking unless you had the filter drained or replaced recently.

If you recently drained or changed the filter as redneck' said that could account for the leak . I had a 6.9 that would "drip" fuel a couple of days after I drained the water separator . Check to make sure the yellow handle on the filter is facing towards the front of the truck and not pointing towards the right side of the truck at all .
Merry Cristmas !

Problem is probably the two little #90 "O" rings at the water seperator valve. when they get old they sometimes leak, starting at first when it is cold and they're less flexible. At first the problem goes away when the temperature or the engine warms up. But total failure is around the corner.

The good news. If this is the problem it is a cheap fix. Simply buy two new "O" rings (get viton). I believe even home depot has them. Even if you wish to put in a whole new valve, the valve is around $50 I think.

The bad news, Plan on spending about 2-3 hours getting familar with your truck engine unless you are an experienced mechanic with the right tools. Anyone can fix it, just a pain-in-the butt.

The valve is just behind the fuel filter at the top of the engine.

Hope this helps.

Smile Diesel Leak

Thanks to all. This is my daughter's truck. She bought new and usually has serviced at Ford dealer. But I don't think the fuel filter has been changed recently. How often should I drain the fuel filter and how often do you change? But I did have the oil and filter changed at a local oil place last week, (think they would have drained water ?). I have had surgery on my hand (last tues.) so looking will be about as far as it goes. She will have to do the testing and tightining of anything.
Thanks again

I change the fuel filter every-other oil change . As far as draining .... If the light comes on ( never has ) I'd drain it . I just drain it when I change filters . OH , what a great time for your daughter to "learn" how to change a fuel filter !!
I hope everything goes well with your hand and you heal fast !
