I have an intermittent starting problem. 1987 V6 2.9 4X4 manual 130,000. The starter runs fine, bu the car will not start once it is warm. I have driven it now twice when it started fine at home, but wouldn't start when I got to the location. The click is heard under the hood and a growl in the gas tank when the key is turned. Any diagnosis steps?
Since no other replied-I'll take a stab at it. It sounds like the starter solenoid is starting to go. It may be mounted on the fender or may be mounted on the starter itself. If you have a heavy wire running to the starter from the fender, its remote mounted(this is usually better)if not, the heavy wire will go straight from the battery to the starter. The remote will look like a round thing with two larger posts on either side and smaller posts sticking out at a slight angle. This sounds like a heat related problem and I have had this problem with my 150 and a work van 350 also. These are not very expensive-this is what you hear clicking when it won't start. The other sound is the fuel pump running. Only other thing to check is battery voltage, should be more just after a run and a little less when it sits overnight, anything under 12.6 vdc and you might run into a problem. Sorry I'm not up on this type engine(83 2.0 w/carb), but mine has the remote mounted on the passenger side, same as the starter. Hope this helps get Ya goin' when Ya need to go! Chuck P.
