Bed Rail Caps -- Removal and Replacement

Hi, all –

Next week I'm getting a spray-in bedliner. I'm planning an over-the-rail installation (this is on a 2001 SCrew). The guy at the shop says that I'm going to have big ugly holes in the top of my rails. I'd prefer not to re-use the originals since they're not going to go well with the liner color.

1. Does anyone know of a source for bed rail caps for SCrews? I couldn't find any.

2. Any tips for removing these? Do I have to destroy them in the process?

Thanks...

mz

I have never seen aftermarket bed rail covers for these. The guy you talked to is right about the holes. You can remove the caps without damage if you are VERY careful. There are tabs on the underside of the caps that fit inside of the holes in the box side. Try to pinch the tabs with pliers while prying upward on the caps. Place the pry tool as close to these tabs as possible while prying. Take your time and be careful not to rip the tabs off the caps or rip holes in them. I had to R/I several sets of these to figure out how to do this without destroying 'em. If it looks like you may ruin them, I would leave 'em alone because I believe they are expensive.

I did get them off...they actually came off pretty easily. I don't know what I'm going to do, though...I really would rather not use them, but I don't think I'm going to find an aftermarket set for this model. I'm wondering if any of the tonneau covers might replace the bed rail, or if they all just fasten on top of them.

If you got the caps off without damage, thats an accomplishment in itself if you have never taken any of these apart. It has been awhile since I installed one, but if I remember right, even the Ford tonneau covers sit on top of the factory bed caps. If there are any tonneaus that replace the bed caps, I have never seen one.
