ok i have a 1978 f-250 4x4 and i just got done putting a 460 in it that came out of a 77 f-250 4x4 and I used the same power steering pump because the one from the 78 351 wouldnt fit
so i put it on and it works fine until the other day i went mudding with her and all of a sudden it quit (its not much fun to drive a f-250 with a 460 with no power steering) so i took it home and looked things over couldnt find anything wrong so i came to this site and searched for power steering questions they said bleed the lines and jack up the front end and turn the wheels stop to stop but still nothing i completly bled the system and i know theres no air in it
so whats the deal can the pump take a crap all of a sudden or what
I know the 77 had a hydrolic cylinder type power steering is this a problem?
and if so how do you mount a 78 pump to a 460?
any idea's??????
Thanx marcus

Reason: add something
It's possible one can just up and quit. I know it sounds stupid but did you check your belt? I had one quit on me once and all it was a lil bit of mud got on the belt and let it slip on the pulley. Looked alright while it was sitting, but have someone turn the wheel while looking at it and see if it slips.
If your going to use the other pump you may need to find a bracket for a 460, or alter the one you have. What was keeping it from working before?
the belts tight (I checked that first, lets just say i know my way around cars but this ones got me stumped im guessing that the pump just up and took a crap
what do you mean by what was keeping it from working before
When I got my truck the power steering didnt' work at all. I changed the inline filter (looks like a metal fuel filter) and then mine was cool.
Never seen anything like it. It worked, suddenly quit, changed filter and with exceptio of the usual PS pump whining it works fine. I also had to add some fluid.
crack the pressure line loose it should spray out fluid when you turn the wheel if thats ok go to the steering valve check it there then each line to the slave cylinder check the front ujoints sometimes when they get stiff they will cause the steering to get really hard also check the ujoint on the steering column if that siezes it will cause the steering to get really tuff this last is from expierance I checked everthing listed above and was ready to tear out the box when i found the steering joint frozen i took iy apart cleaned it buffed it and will never forget to grease when i change oil again
mine did the same thing pull the lines off and then put new power steering fluid in and if it sprays good out the pump then just replace the lines and it should start working also lube up the gearbox
Found this site since I just bought a 77 f-150. I guess the guy needed Christmas $$$ since it was a steal. Anyway, the PS in it isn't working. He said it had something to do with the pitman arm because the truck is lifted 4". If this could be the case let me know please!
Mine is lifted 4 inches and i had no problems but mine was a little rough but a friend of mine sprayed a bunch of lube stuff all over all the steering components and it worked fine from there on
has ony one ever had the power steering hoses blow out of the pump on the high pressure side, happened to me, i had to push it back in the housing or fitting, then wrap a tie down around it so it wouldnt blow out and drove home, bought two hoses just in case. really sucks when yo uhave no power steering
i bought a new power steering pump so we will see if that works it ran for YEARS!!!! dry so it probably just shot but i dont under stand why it worked for a while and yess all of the fittings are tight and every thing moves free its got to be the pump i think $50 should fix it
i had that happen to me i did a 351 to 460 swap used old pump, when i got it started and ran for like two days fine and then just quit replaced pump and the pump is still it to my knowledge.
