I grew up with cats and dogs, can't imagine being without them. That said, I must mention that I am currently between dogs right now, but we have a 17-yr-old Seal Point Siamese cat. My last cat was a Russian Blue, but she picked me, I didn't pick her. The one I had before that was also a Seal Point Siamese, but she was killed by a cat-hating neighbor who set traps in his yard baited with tuna. He said if any cat came into his yard, then it was fair game, so he used the tuna to draw them in. Then he would take the trap and upend it into a barrel of water, drowning the cat. I didn't find out his method till after I had moved from there, always wanted to go back and fill his (Chevy) truck cab with feral cats. -TD
While I personally have nothing against them. Almost everytime you enter a house with a cat you can tell it. I really don't see why people want the smell of urine in a residence, it really is not real impressive to people that don't have them. I don't mind cats outside and in houses where you can't constantly tell they are there. Cats can be clean and they can be filthy as well. It's amazing how you can walk into a house and instantly know they have a cat , yet it doesn't seem to bother them at all.
I like cats. I'm a dog person myself, but I like cats too. I have found cats have their own personalities (my family got "adopted" by a cat once!) just like people and it depends on how you relate to the cat as to whether the cat is friend or foe!
I LOVE CATS! I have seven of them...ALL indoor cats...and NO! my house does not smell...people are surprised when they come in and see I even have cats.
It all depends on how clean the litter boxes are kept. My cats are brushed weekly and bathed in Ivory soap (no they don't like it!) but even family members who are allergic to them can come over my house and their allergies don't bother them. All my cats are rescued "pound" kitties and live with me for their whole lives.
We have one. Named Gus because he adopted us one August night. Wife and I were coming back from somewhere about 2 in the morning. He was about 6 months old and was sitting in the middle of a 4 lane road. We stopped to try to get him to go at least to the curb. When I went to get him he ran away from me and climbed right into the car. We took him home and when we opened the door he just followed us into the house and has stayed for 9 years. When we go on vacation he somehow knows that if the neighbor that takes care of our house doesnt get there fast enough to feed him he goes to her house. He found one spot in the corner of the garden to take care of his business and goes nowhere else. He roams the neighborhood, plays with the kids and will not scratch nor bite them no matter how rough they treat him. He knows the sound of both our cars and my motorcycle and if he is out when he hears them he will come home and greet us. He plays and sleeps with our Golden and plays with the boxer several houses down. He's 9 now.

It's not the cat's fault, it's whether or not the cat owner keeps the litterbox clean. Think how it would smell in someone's house if they let the toilet fill up with excrement and only flushed it when it got too full to put anything more in. (What happened to the barf smiley?) Another problem is that when the litterbox gets too full, the cat doesn't want to use it any more (Gee, I wonder why?) and looks for alternate places to do their business. You can't smell anything nasty in our house, we keep the litterbox cleaned out and use Pine cat litter pellets...good stuff. -TD
I like having cats. We currently have four-although two of those were "unauthorized" rescues by my wife.
Ours might be the exception, and not the norm, but ours are very loyal pets. They also pretty much take care of themselves as long as there is food and water in their bowl. The litter box needs to be cleaned, but I would have to clean up doggie doo out of the yard anyway if we had a dog.
One cold rainy day we found a small wet fur ball on our porch. I announced that it could stay until the rain stopped, no longer. As if it sensed which human had to be convinced, he jumped into my lap and went to sleep .... we kept JAC (J ust A C at) for over 15 years. He tolerated other people but he made it plain which one of us was his human.

Hate em. I have no problem with cats (or any pet) when owners take care of them, and keep them inside, or at least on their property. When they start hanging around my house, animal control takes care of them. This ranges from the county animal control officer, to the local coyotes.
