If I am going to build a 410 out of a 68 murk 390 block10.5, do I use 428 crank & 428 rod's & what piston's do I use I don't mind using forged pistons 10.1. If so I have found a set of 428 rod's with coding of C7-8 on the rod's for $150.00 . Are these 428 rod's ??? I plan on using the stock head's ported valves are 2.02 & 1.55 & don't mind using 94 octane fuel everything else I have is & has to !!! This is to be put in my 65 sb cc , C-6 & 3.70 gear's & what cam do I use ? I want lot's of power not roller yet. I have rpm intake & willing to use a bigger carb if I have to eldbrock 650 on it now , changing out the headers also to ??? brand. I need to know which one's to get ??
I'll leave the specifics to the experts, but all you need is the 428 crank, the short rods are short rods (390/428...). For the pistons, look to the low compression truck pistons (Silvolite 1130's I think) or the higher cr 1131's. Balance the whole deal with the harmonic balancer and flywheel/flexplate. The carb will probably be good to start with and I would go with a cam grind like the Crane 901.
I think the rods your looking at are C7AE-B rods and yes they are 428 PI/CJ rods and weigh 762-774 grams each. For $150 they should be ready to use and sized, bushed etc... That's about the price for a set of these reconditioned. What 390 rods do you have? (casting number) G.
These guys have it pretty much under control, but I thought I'd throw out some part numbers for ya. You dont want the 1130's, they have a 1.76" compression height and would stick .058" above the deck. The pistons you want for this 410 build are the Silvolite 1139's. They will leave the piston with .042" deck clearance. Figuring 70cc combustion chambers, 4.375" diameter .043" thick head gasket, and a 10cc dish in the pistons, you're looking at 9.45 compression.
If you want more compression and a forged piston, the TRW L2303 is the piston you want. They have a 1.674" compression height, as compared to the silvolite's 1.66". Figuring the same 70cc combustion chambers, 4.375" diameter .043" thick head gasket, and 5cc valve reliefs, you're looking at 10.18 compression.
In either case I recommend a Crane 343941 cam. I have one in my truck and it works great. If you use the TRW pistons, you'll have enough compression you could step up to a roller cam. The Crane 349521 should provide a significant power increase over the 941.
I have a 10 to 1 390 in my truck with the 941 cam, and it gets by just fine on 89 octane. No pinging. So I wouldn't be afraid of the TRW's and the extra compression they provide.
Something I just remembered some C7-B rods are used in 390's and have ther smaller dia rod bolts than the 428. ARP makes the aftermearket smaller dia rod bolts and nuts. Some guys like to use the smaller dia bolt rods and upgrade to ARP hardware. They feel they are stronger than the larger old 428 style because the smaller bolts holes would be less stressed to fatigue and fail. Just something to ask the seller about. G.
hi all wire we are talking rods , rusty can you tell me what rod i have ?
number on one slide , c7tea next slide is a60 j i think they are 361 , payed
$150 aussie dollars for this old fe was told it was a 390 , but stoke is 3.1/2
