Last week I changed the coolant in my 1993 3.0L V-6. Other than the fact that the coolant seemed to have a lot of rust in it everything went fine. No problems since. I came home from work tonight and when I got out I could smell hot coolant. There was coolant dripping off the right side of the engine. I initially thought it was coming from between water pump and the block. I then thought it was maybe at the water neck into the block, and then I thought it might be a heater hose. I refilled the radiator (it required very little water to bring it up to the top.) I restarted the truck (without being able to find any leaks) and drove it around. When I got home I opened the radiator cap and got a huge "Burp" of air and fluid. But I still don't see anymore of the original leak.
The engine isn't running hot (the gauge never got out of the normal range) nor does it actually seem to be hot. The water pump was redone about two years ago.
Any ideas? Another bad water pump? Thermostat stuck? Maybe I didn't get the truck fully drained and filled the first time?
Sounds to me like you didn't let it come up to temp before putting the cap back on. That's what the "burp" was. Maybe a bad radiator cap that's not holding pressure.
When I drain the coolant in my 2.8 V6 84 or my 2.9 V6 88 I have to fill it though the upper radiator hose because if I fill it at the cap the coolant can't get past the thermostat and into the engine block. If the coolant isn't in the block the thermostat will not open the gage can show cold or warm but it's realy over heating. Hope you didn't blow a headgasket.
I have a similar replaced the water pump on my 91 Ranger, 3.0L, about 1.5 years ago. Now, during warm weather, it will blow coolant out the overfill tank after shutdown (no problem all winter, however). The temp gauge reads normal. How was your problem resolved?
I am slightly embarrased to admit it was only a split heater hose. The hose had split right where it goes into the water pump on the back side. In the dark I couldn't see the split. The next day when the sun was out I was able to figure out the problem. I put in new hoses, flushed the radiator and haven't had a problem since.
