It is time to replace the brake pads on my 2001 F-150 SuperCrew. This truck is a 4X2 with all discs. Which pads - found at the local parts suppler - do y'all recommend? The last aftermarket set I put on (Wagner's, I think) the front gave me about 1/2 the life of the originals, but 3X the dust, which lead to grumbling when coming to a stop. I was happy with the performance and life of the originals, but Ford wants ~$200 for a full set of Motorcrafts.
I have had very good results from Albany brakes. I think they are the house brand at Advance and at AutoZone.
I know some will poo-poo them, saying you shouldn't risk cheap parts when it comes to brakes.
But, my experience has been VERY good. In fact, I once removed a set of Performance Friction pads after less than 1K miles because they did not offer nearly as good performance as the Albany brakes I had replaced.
I threw the P.F. pads in the garbage and went back with Albany.
Also, their lifetime warranty is just that. If you wear your pads out, take them back and they give you a new set.
It works for me!
The Albany pads are good. They had a tour of their plant on Speed Channel the other day. Albany makes many brands, just diffferent color paint and boxes.
If they are available for your truck, get the Duralast brand pads at AutoZone. They are OEM quality pads and make very little dust and no noise. I put them on my Windstar 6 months ago and the wheels hardly get dirty at all now!!
Along with the type of brake pad suggested. Who machines brake rotors if they aren't scored? I generally just hone mine with very good results. I don't like taking metal off rotors if I don't have to.
I checked out the Autozone website. They do show Duralast rather than the Albany as their brand offered. I know they used to sell Albany. Are the Duralasts made by Albany? Are they the same pad? Is this just marketing?
Not sure if Albany makes Duralast.
However, since Advance Auto is much closer and more convenient to my house than Auto Zone, the front pads and rear shoes (rears installed this past weekend) are Duralast from Advance Auto. I am VERY happy with them. I believe they too carry the lifetime warranty.
I have not had to have a rotor or drum turned in years. I have done brakes may times on many autos (ours and family members).
If the rotors aren't scored, I don't do anything. I have never had a problem doing this.
In fact, the last rotors I had turned were on an E.B Explorer which received the afore mentioned Performance Friction pads. Turning the rotors offered no benefit. That is when I trashed the Performance Friction pads and made a trip to Autozone for Albany pads.
Problem solved.
I'm with Brian A. Other than the '68 Chevelle SS I drove in high school, I have never turned a rotor or drum and have never had a problem. I guess I get to the pads before damage is done.
On the other hand, I have a coworker that turns his rotors every time he replaces the pads. When I asked him why, he said, "uhhh, cus yur supposed to." Right.
Motorcraft is the best pad. 200 is a little excessive, I think. We use Thermo quiet at the independent shop I work for, and they don't squeak at all, something I didn't know aftermarket pads were capable of until I jumped ship from the Ford dealer. I would reccomend them. On a side note, the only downfall they have is in a test of aftermarket pads (done by another company) TQ's supposedly wear the rotors more than some others. But you still can't go wrong with Motorcraft!
what kind of milage are you guys getting on a set of front pads? noticed a little squealing from my '03 S/C FX4 the other day and it's only got 22K miles on it. seems a little early for pads.
you should be getting 45k at the very least. I just changed my father's pads on his 01 4.6 F150, he was at 38k, and his pads looked like they had another 15k miles left in them.
I average about 35-45,000 miles on front pads.
I replaced the rear shoes this past weekend at 151,000 miles. They were the originals (2000 model) and honestly looked only 20-25% worn. I had new shoes and was looking for something to do........
911 Extreme Performance by autospeciality. These are for ambulances and police cars. I use them in my F 150, pulling a trailer, and no problems so far.
