Drill Doctor Sharpener?

Hi -

Anyone on here have any experience with the Drill Doctor sharpeners? Is it worth the money and effort, or is it better to just replace the cheap bits and have the expensive ones professionally repaired?

Go down a few messages and you'll find that I just posted this question. I was looking at the $20 model from Harbor Freight and got several replies.

Most seem to like the drill Dr. Some gave tips on using a grinder to sharpen larger bits.

One thing to note is that some of the more costly bits I have are larger 5/16, 1/2, 5/8 I don't think the Drill Dr. would handle these.

I wish a friend had a sharpner, I'm just too cheap and have too many other wants....

I do up to 3/4" on my drill Dr., I had a sharpening shop and can do a good job on a grinder free hand. But if you want the right angles every time Drill Dr. is the only way to go. Greg

thanks for the words on that, gbadgley...I see that it will handle up to a 3/4" drill, but what's the smallest it can do?

I too have one and love it. Worth the money. It is nice to always have a fresh bit. I also took a 1/2" bit that was broken in half and made it look like new in about 10 minutes.

One of the better tools I have bought, worth every penny. Cheap drill bits are just that, the drill doctor won't make them work any better. If your going to spend the money on a drill doctor, get yourself a high quality set of cobalt drill bits to go with it.

I have a drill dr and it does a great job. It has saved trips to the hardware store when working on a project and the bit gets dull.

Duksrule, what drill did you break off that 1/2" bit in? I think 150ford whould want to know for his best drill quest.
you could cut that 10 min sharpening in half if you "ruff in" a broken bit esepecially that big on a grinder first. I've noticed the drill doctor is lacking some power when sharpening 1/2 or bigger. but all in all its a great product!

I got a DD500 for Christmas and like it. Takes a little getting used to. Sharpens to 1/2 and larger with optional chuck and stone. I've only sharpened one badly damaged bit so far but it looks good and was easy.

Anyone have opinions on split point bits? The doctor does that too.

besides less bit walking without a pilot hole or center punch mark, the split points drill a cleaner more cicular hole. unlike the 3 sided egg shaped hole from a conventional style bit. thats a plus when hole size or clearance matters. you don't have to drill 1 or 2 sizes bigger to get something to fit.

Thumbs up

I bought a Drill Doctor from ENCO, 750 pro series. Handles up to 3/4" Love it. Worth every bit---no pun intended. Good tool for the price. The split point on it is a little small but it does the job. You would have to spend 10 times the $ to get anything better. I got a great price from Enco (About $130, retail is $190 for the 750 i think). Just be sure of what you buy from them. Their return policy is not user friendly.
FYI-- I got great customer service from Drill Doctor. They resolved the issue on their nickle when ENCO told me to go fish.

Does anyone know if the Drill Dr. will work on "Masonary" Bits ? I seem to burn them up after 2-3 holes.

At least the larger ones do...that's a big part of my interest in one.

The drill Doc uses a diamond stone that lasts a long time. Will sharpen carbide/masonary tipped bits well.
