overheating 2001 explorer

I own a 2001 explorer that just started overheating. The temp gage gets close to red when driving but when idling it goes back down. I have noticed the car stutter a little but not much. i checked the oil and it smells a little like gas. Any ideas what this could be?

Thermostat probably went bad. Easy fix on both the standard 4.0 and SOHC 4.0. Took me 20 min on my '99 SOHC and NAPA had the part for $13.
