Thumbs up 4 spd toploader installation pics

Last week there was discussion about putting a car 4 spd in a truck.

I've done this a few times and was requested to post a few shots of what it looks like and what it takes to do it. If you check out my '67 F100 gallery you will find the pics that show what it looks like put in truck.

tranny pics

If there are any questions, feel free.....

Thanks for posting that, a subject close to my heart right now!
Can you tell me what was in the truck originally, what the toploader came out of and if mounting crossmember and/or drive shaft had to change or be modified? The shifter looks good, but I'm not sure it would work with a bench'
Cheers

The truck had a MX/FMX tranny.
As for what the toploader came out of?? Never really paid attention to tag. It's a small input/output, wide ratio, short length tranny. I would assume Fairlane or such. The rear mount has alot to do with it. I just look for that configuration when buying a box.

The mount from my auto was re-used, it was the same. I had to move the crossmember forward a bit and re-drill frame holes. No biggie. I had the front half of driveshaft(2 pc) shortened by about 4" and a slip yoke installed. Automatics usually have a bolt on flange.

If you notice in the pictures, the shifter mounts in the middle of tailhousing, but there are other holes that were not drilled. This too denotes what it came from. With pickups I like to use the front mount to move it forward more. Even if I had a bench seat(which I HATE also ), I would have made a curved handle to come out and around it. I think Hurst makes a handle very similair. I just cut a short handle, added a few inches to raise it up and used it. Not pretty, but functional. If I came across something better someday I can change it.

This guy:

http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/componentmfg.htm

Does a street rod shifter for toploaders that would work in a PU. Pricey.

He also has id charts and tailshaft charts and shifter charts and Hurst shifter lists etc etc.

Davids a really nice guy. I know him personally and have dealt with him on parts for my trannies. He is working on getting "new" cases and tailhousing manufactured. He has quite a selection of new and rebuild parts.

I've seen the conversion kit. Quite a uniqe set up. It mounts the shifter into the top lid. Interesting conversion.

why couldn't you use a 78-79 OD shifter with a car toploader?
it uses the tailshaft to mount the shifter and they work with a bench seat.
The 2nd pic in my 79 F150 gallery shows where the shifter comes through the floor.

is the car toploader shift pattern?

Yup, that's a std ford pattern.
I'm not sure that that tailhousing is compatible with the std toploader. It might bolt on, but the length of tailhousing MIGHT be different. I've never seen anyone try it. I'v never owned one to see either.

You can use my set up with a bench seat, but you just need to make up a handle to fit. I had a friend do it with his '75 F100. Don't remember what handle he bought, but it worked great.
