Today after cold starting my 97 F-250 Light Duty w/ 5.4L the oil gauge read 0 and the oil light came on (this was after driving for a minute). I pulled into a gas station and checked my oil, it was fine. So I started it up again, and the gauge read perfect. When I pulled out of the gas station, the oil light came on again and gauge read 0. As I went down the street the gauge went back to normal (no oil light) and then bounced around for a good 5 minutes. Is this just my oil sender, or gauge, or oil pump?
Symptoms of a bad sending unit "switch". Keep in mind, this is an "idiot light" type of oil pressure gauge, and either reads ZERO, or half-scale, it doesn't show fluctuations in oil pressure.
Drivers side in front next to the oil filter. It's pretty easy to get to. They make a special socket that fits it. They're pretty cheap and it makes it a lot easier to remove and install.
I have recently started getting similar symptoms as described in the original post. I am going to replace the sending unit as a first (and hopefully last) step to correct the issue.
Where do you get the special socket for the sending unit? Can someone post a pic or diagram of what the sending unit looks like so that I can start thinking through the replacement?
Lastly, do you have to do anything to "reset" the system following replacement of the sending unit. I am reminded of the step to disconnect battery for ~15 minutes following a MAF sensor clean. Just wondering if I should plan on a similar step following the sending unit replacement.
BTW, I have a 97 4x4. Does that influence the location of the sending unit as described by LxMan?
Well my motor blew up last month! It had no oil pressure! They don't think it was the oil pump, but something else internal. The bottom end was so thrashed, that I could not even get the dipstick back in!

My god, that royally blows, sorry to hear about it
WHOA! I am having the same problem. When it's below 20 degrees in the morning, my oil gauge is 0 and light comes on. This happens for a good 5 minutes of driving. It's been doing this for about a month. I noticed my oil was really black at the last change and just think the send has dirt in it. I only have 39000 miles. Since then my tranny went out and I can't go in reverse or over 50 with O/D on. Maybe it's time for a F-250SD.
