First, I am no mechanic and am looking to take my truck to the dealer to get it fixed. What I do not want is to be ripped off by the dealer, so...
Well, my trusty 2001 ford 4x4 5.4L extended cab will not start. I have around 62k miles on it. It started just fine yesterday and drove nicely as always. This morning, it will not fire up. It almost does, but won't. I assumed a bad fuel filter and I cannot replace it because I do not know how to remove the existing one from the line, special tool? I looked for a repair manual at the parts store but they did not have one, is there one? I am stumped without a manual. I cannot even see the spark plugs, where they are, and was going to pull one wire to see if I was getting a spark. The parts guy doesn't even have a number for a replacement module , because it's not listed for this year, said it might be a computer problem or a fuel pump. Thanks guys.
Will it start if you give it a little gas before cranking? If so, check the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve on top of the throttle body. Autozone usually has the tool to replace the fuel filter. The module on top of the spark plug is called a COP (coil on plug) and most parts stores carry them. Hope that helps.
It doesn't have a module like the old ones did. Try holding the gas down about 1/4 way while cranking and see if it will start. Most any parts store should have the fuel line tool. Just make sure that there is no pressure in the line before removing the filter.
Have you checked the inertia switch (fuel pump shut off switch)? It could be tripped. It should be in the passengerside kick panel.
Thanks for the reply. The truck has been towed to the dealers. I know, why did I do that? I have had all kinds of suggestions from fuel pump to the switch and today at work, from a fellow co-worker, I found out there is a retired ford mechanic not more than 5 miles and he would have brought his dianostic tools over and checked it out. His labor rates are half what the dealer charges and he's an honest joe from what I am told. I will post the problem as the dealer sees it.
the bottom half of the intake is plastic and it may have a crack or a chunk out of it . i had this problem with my 98 i bought it used with 70 thou on the clock it had just a tick of a slugish throttle responce before it went out bad enough it wouldnt run the replacement is all aluminum and wont have this problem again
I got the truck back from the dealer today. Turns out it was the mass air flow sensor at $176.00 and labor at $198.00 plus an oil change for $25.00 plus tax. My cost was $78.00 because I was smart enough to get an extended warranty, but I was not smart enough to remember I purchased the extended warranty. The dealer really took care of me and was extremely curtious to my wife, as she dealt with them on the phone while I was at work. All in all it's going to be a good christmas after all. Oh, another $29.00 for a car wash, I was feeling guilty after what happened to my truck and I know it likes a bath now and again.
