A4LD ReInstall problem

my freind had recently pulled his A4LD tranny out of a 88 ranger truck..put new seals in it because they were leakin like crazy..the problem is..he put it back in & has NOTHING..no gears at all..could it be because the torque converter wasnt installed properly?..the transmission worked flawlessly before he pulled it..is there a system for the torque converter to be properly put in the tranny?..any answers would help ALOT..thank you in advance

Yes, you push it on, then give it a 1/4 to half turn or so then push it in again as you are turning it and it should "clunk" in the rest of the way. If you only pushed it in once, it isn't seated all the way.
