how can i tell if my torque converter has gone bad? i had to remove the tranny because of a blown front seal and cannot get my converter to seat all the way.also it gave the signs of a blown seal but it does not look bad. any help is much appreciated!! THANKS, PECK
I had an 88 with a bad converter.Mine would not move.I took it off and looked inside and I could see where the splines inside the converter where rounded off.I replaced the converter and it was fine.I don,t know what caused it to round off, I got it not moving.
when you put the torque convertor back on..keep turning and pushing on it will CLICKS 3 TIMES..then it is in position. Also..if the front main pump seal was leaking or appeared to be leaking..it is VERY POSSIBLE the covertor is bad also. I had my trans in and out 3 times replacing the front main pump seal just to find out it was the convertor that was doing the leaking.
If it's leaking out the housing when shut down, faulty torque converter, cracked weld. If you have it out, take it to a shop and have it looked at, they can repair it.
I don't see it going bad and not going it, sometimes it takes a lot of turns to get it to finally fall into place, don't push too hard while turning either, that will also make it difficult.
okay, i finally got brave enough (or dumb enough) to unbolt the bellhousing from the tranny.then i tried to fit it back to the converter. it fell right in place.i have no idea why it worked but hopefully when i replace the front seal it will work right again. the converter is fine.so hopefully i will have no more problems.any more input is greatly appreciated!!!! thanks for all of the help so far!!!!
