Been flying helicopters for 30+ years. I haven't put time in my logbook for about 10 years, but guessing about 15,000 hrs. It used to be a lot of fun, now it's just a job. And since 9/11 it's getting worse. Glad I'm in the "twilight years" of my aviation career and not just starting out.
It took me four years to get my Private, in 2003. There are 150 hours logged, mostly in Cessna 152's, but also one lesson in a Tomahawk and a few flights in a Diamond Katana, modern, but underpowered. I have also ridden in Robinson R22 helicopters and a Dehavilland Beaver floatplane. 20+ years in aerospace engineering on the military and space side, and the small stuff still exites me.
With the new Light Sport aircraft rule just approved in August, I am looking to build a kit airplane, possibly a Sonex or Zenith. Traditional airplanes are just too expensive for a normal individual to own.
Had some lessons in a 152 many years ago. Flew a friend's J-3 a few time -what a great little plane. Sort of lost interest in planes and ended up with a commercial/instructor in lighter than air (balloons). Really nice way to fly just to fly and if you don't need to get anywhere.
I have my A&P licenses. Just not working as a aircraft mechanic yet. I do work around planes though. I load and unload the planes at DTW, detroit metro airport. I just went back to work in fact 3 days ago, I was laid off from northwest airlines. Most of the time I work around the narrow bodies, DC-9, A319/A320, B757. Sometimes I work the wide bodies, A330, DC-10, B747. Sure wish I could work on them though. Im still young so one day I'll make it there. Fred
My nephew is also an A&P but he pretty much flat out refuses to work on the big boys. He likes working on Pipers, Cessnas, King Airs, things like that. Granted his "day job" is a Ford dealer technician but he does odd jobs for pilots on the side.
Did you check out AAR? They opened up here in the old United maintenance center and they're doing sub work from the majors.
I got my private in 79 and logged about 120 hrs.
Had to stop while raising kids(4).They cost more than flying.Last one graduates next year and there are thoughts of flying again.
I have all the ratings through Airline Transport Pilot, and currently am a Captain on an EMB 145 regional Jet. Last time i checked, I had about 7100 hrs, with all but the first 1700 in either a Saab 340 or and Embraer regional jet.
I worked on and flew in C-130,s for 4 years in the 60,s helped put the flight controls on 25 of the C-5a,s; worked at a private airport in70 down in Ga. for a while.
Some of the old cloth covered planes. Can't think of the names of them now.
I do miss those times.
Never flown in a small plane.
