I read through a lot of the posts here regarding the misfires on the 5.4 engines. I was curious what symptoms those of you who had the COP's go bad experienced prior to and right after the misfire started.
I was on the highway last night, cruising right along, with no problems. Then, the truck started jerking once or twice every 15 seconds or so. I stopped to fill my tank for the pending snowstorm tonight, and headed on my way. Then, it happened. I was going up a hill, and the truck started jerking and jolting violently. I thought it was the transmission slipping, but at idle, I felt and saw the engine shaking more than usual. This morning I went out to run an errand, and from the start, the engine was misfiring and barely had enough power to get out of its own way. I was initially fearing one of the plugs was "thrown", from the posts I have seen here regarding that topic. But, at times, the engine runs smooth and has all power, then it starts misfiring. Does this sound like a COP problem? I'm dropping it off at my Ford dealer in the morning. Any replies are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Yep sounds like a bad COP. Did the check engine light come on? If you scan the computer, it will tell you which cylinder misfired.
If it blows a plug out of a head, you will know it, it gets very loud every time the piston comes up on compression stroke.
No, the check engine light didn't come on. That was one of the first things I started looking for. I feel better knowing it could be a COP rather than the spark plug. And with a snowstorm coming...Ugh - perfect timing.
Well, wouldn't you know it. I went out to move the Expy to get the work car out and, bingo, the "Service Engine Soon" light came on. With the Expy still being under the factory warranty with only 32,000 miles, do you think the dealer will replace all 8 COP's or only the bad one(s)? Guess I'm asking for a little much for all 8, huh?
Well, took the Expy to the dealer this morning, and they replaced the #2 COP and spark plug under warranty. She runs like a champ again! Thanks again, Jimmy, for your help!
