I HAVE AN 88 FORD RANGER.THE PROBLEM I AM HAVING IS WHEN THE TRUCK REACHES A NORMAL OPERATING TEMP THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON I EXPERIENCE A SMALL LOSS OF POWER WHEN DRIVING BUT WHEN IT GOES OFF IT GIVES A LITTLE SURGE OF POWER. WHEN SITTING STILL THE LIGHT COMES ON AND THE RPMS DROP DOWN TO ABOUT 500 OR IN SOME INSTANCES DIES ALL TOGETHER BUT WHEN THE LIGHT GOES OFF IT GOES BACK TO NORMAL. MY QUESTION IS THIS PART OF ME WANTS TO GO GET AN O2 SENSOR AND REPLACE IT BUT I DONT WANT TO SPEND 50 BUCKS AND THIS NOT BE THE PROBLEM ANYBODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS
The problem is probably more than $50 bucks. An O2 sensor would help, so would cleaning or replacing the egr valve, so would running the computer codes on it to see what the engine will tell you is wrong with itself, so would spending about $500 to get the dealer straighten out all the things that are probably wrong with an 88 if you have never taken the time to take care of it or been willing to spend a mere $50 on a fine piece of machinery!

Well , Joe1234 , Start with the basics , From what you describe a cleaning of the throttle body & Idle speed control wouldnt hurt . Dont replace parts unless you have determined they are at fault . Unlike some previous suggestions , you wont need a $500 diagnosis from a dealer or anyone if you want to invest a little time & effort on your part to fix the problem . If you run into problem or need help there are a few of us here that will try to help instead of offering rude comments . So to begin with , invest in a can of Intake & Throttle body cleaner & see what that does . If that doesnt seem to help , you can scan the EEC for any trouble codes .
Check the coolant temp sensor. If it is running wrong, it may make the engine believe that it is running at a temp different from where it is at, which it would add/reduce the fuel, depending on the temp - ex. if saying cold, engine would say more fuel (like a choke).
