welding body panels

lI don't have a wire feed and I am not good enough to do the light metal with my stick welder. What would be wrong with brazing them in place. I have always heard not to braze them but no one ever has said why. The tensile strength of brass is plenty good and I would think it is more flexible than
wire.

It's not a question of strength. Matter of fact, I have brazed together several whitewater raft frames. Some have been wrapped around rocks. I've never had a brazed joint fail.

It has to do with the flux issues and with the painting process that people are concerned with. Personally, I have brazed up small holes and didnt run into problems. Some of the older cars have brazed joints in the B-pillar and other small areas.

Warpage is a big factor in brazing, too much heat will distort the body panel.
Older vehicles have a heavier guage panel, newer panels are much lighter.

Practice with a scrap piece by cutting a square out of the center then braze it back in place. Take your time, a warped panel will need to shrunk back into place with striking tools, IE slap file, hammer off dolly method, or heat strike then quench will a torch.

Brazing is acceptable but not preferred. It all depends on the results you expect.

I've done it both ways. MIG and oxy/acetylene and MIG is about 1,000% easier.

Unless you are a pro with a torch I'd beg, borrow, or steal a wire welder.

Also do a search here for using glue to install body panels. I used to have the link in my favorites, but since the "crash" I lost it.

when u say stick welding are u refering to Arc welding. I do some arc welding in school and i'm decent but how well do u have to do on your panels. i know you cant have huge inconsistent blobs all down the line but cant you grind the weld flat with the truck?

go mig a stick welder will usually burn right through and will get the panel extremely hot. gas welding will also get them hot but can be done with extreme care with the smallest tip you can find but i agree its 1000% easier with mig

I agree with jimlj. Glueing eliminates all the negatives of welding and also the need to find a mig that you do not have. Also the joint is more corrosion resistant with glue if done right.
Just my 2 cents

Interestingly the strength of brazing is often stronger
than some body panel steel. The Formula 1 space
frames were/are often brazed rather than welded.

Body panel glue application seems to be the up
and coming thing. There should be stuff in the
archives as this had a big thread a couple months
ago.
